In swimming, EVERY point matters, and NO margin of victory is too small. And last night's classic showdown between Delta and Yorktown proved both points.
The 20th ranked Lady Tigers led from start to finish in a 115-71 victory over Delta. Senior Larah Beaver and freshman Lauren Elston each posted four wins, with three more each by juniors Jessica Extine and Caroline Grasso. Senior Chelsea Watters, juniors Kersea Gable and Ashley Sexton, and freshman Katelyn Grasso were also winners.
But it was the Mighty Men of Yorktown who stole the show. The boys dug out from under a 57-46 deficit with five events to go to steal the meet from the Eagles.
Freshman Alex Nickoli led a 1-2 finish in the 500 Free (5:34.72) to cut the DHS lead in half; sophomore Scott Heavilon surged at the wall to outtouch Delta's Sam Zimmerman by three-hundredths of a second in the 100 Breast (1:11.50). But that still left the Eagles ahead 83-82 heading into the final event of the night.
The winner-take-all 400 Free Relay was a pulse-pounding showdown, and the Tiger boys responded to the challenge. Freshmen Isiah Huisman, Luke Ledbetter and Nickoli joined Heavilon in racing to an 11-second win, clinching the sweep for YHS!
The dog tired Tigers are back in action on Thursday, when they travel to New Palestine for a Hoosier Heritage Conference matchup with the Dragons.

DELTA AT YORKTOWN PREVIEW
It'll be double the swimmers, double the fun tonight in the Yorktown High School pool. That's because it's time for the boys to join the girls for the first coed meet of the 2011-12 season!
The Delta Eagles come to call this evening in the first Hoosier Heritage Conference competition of the year for the Tigers. Last year, the YHS girls defeated Delta 126-60, with the boys completing the sweep by a score of 113-67.
The '11-12 edition of the Lady Tigers are still looking for their first victory. The girls have dropped to 20th in this week's IHSSCA rankings. They should have a relatively easy time picking up win number one this evening--weather permitting. But the meet could be much closer if junior Caroline Grasso is unable to compete.
The boys are unranked to start the season for the first time in a long time. YHS will rely on junior Thommy Brown and sophomore Scott Heavilon to lead the way on the scoreboard. The Tigers have MAJOR question marks about their scoring depth heading into their opener. But that's what racing is all about--someone will HAVE to step up for the boys to have much success this season. Who will it be?

TIGERS DOWN ONE SPOT IN RANKINGS
The Yorktown Tigers have dropped one spot in the girls rankings released today by the Indiana High School Swim Coaches Association (IHSSCA). The ladies head into the Thanksgiving break at #16, with 27 rating points. The rankings are based on a theoretical State Meet scored through 16 places, based on times REPORTED to IHSSCA. Not every team reports the results of every meet, a factor that skews how teams are rated.
In fact, that phenomenon impacts Yorktown in this week's poll. IHSSCA ranks Yorktown #12 in the 200 Medley Relay (1:57.76 at the Westfield Invitational), when the Tigers' best time (1:56.42 at Lawrence North) would put them #11 in more accurate rankings.
The same holds true in the 400 Yard Free Relay. IHSSCA puts YHS at #16, based on their 3:59.47 at Westfield on Saturday. The Tigers' 3:48.90 two days earlier at LN would be good enough to move up five places to #11, ahead of powerful Center Grove.
The Tigers have also crept into the rankings in the 200 Free Relay at #28.

TIGERS 4TH, BEAVER BREAKS RECORD AT WESTFIELD
The Yorktown Tigers rode a record-breaking effort from senior Larah Beaver, finishing 4th in the team standings at Saturday's Westfield Invitational.
Beaver showcased outstanding underwater work en route to Yorktown's only event victory of the day in the 100 Back. Beaver held off impressive Westfield freshman Emily Verbrugge (59.54 to 59.87), with both swimmers bettering Beaver's old record of 1:00.51 set on her father's birthday at the 2009 meet. Larah now owns the 100 Back record at the Westfield and Homestead Invitationals, the sectional, the Hoosier Heritage Conference, and both YHS and Yorktown Swim Club.
The next best finish of the day for the Lady Tigers was 3rd place--by Beaver in the 200 IM (2:19.53), by junior Jessica Extine in the 100 Fly (1:04.83), and by the 200 Medley Relay 'A' quartet of juniors Caroline Grasso and Kersea Gable, Extine and Beaver (1:57.76).
Freshman Lauren Elston continues to impress in her first few meets as Tiger. Elston was right on Extine's heels in the 100 Fly, touching the wall in 4th (1:05.12). Lauren would go on to add a 6th place effort in the 100 Free (59.96).
Several other Yorktown athletes posted Top 10 efforts at Westfield. The 'B' entrant in the 200 Medley Relay, freshman Katie Keller, senior Chelsea Watters, Elston and junior Ashley Sexton, finished in 10th place (2:09.50). Junior Caroline Grasso swam to 6th place efforts in the 200 Free (2:13.27) and 100 Back (1:04.53). Senior Sam Mahon (149.15) and junior Ellie Smith (133.10) placed 5th and 9th, respectively, in the diving competition. Both the 'A' and 'B' groupings in the 200 Free Relay cracked the Top 10. The 'A' team of Sexton, junior Macey Taylor, Gable and senior Erin Moreno was 7th (1:56.86), with Keller, senior Kirsten Nickoli, freshman Bailey Windell and freshman Katelyn Grasso 10th (2:01.16).
Two Lady Tigers cracked the Top 10 in the 100 Breast--Gable was 7th (1:21.96), Katelyn Grasso was 9th (1:23.33). And both of Yorktown's 400 Free Relay entries got to the wall in the Top 10. The 'A' version of Elston, Caroline Grasso, Extine and Beaver grabbed 6th (3:59.47), with the 'B' squad of Chelsea Watters, Katelyn Grasso, Moreno and Taylor 10th (4:26.20)
Swimmers from other schools also put on a show for the overflow crowd. Westfield's Emily Verbrugge showed that she'll make an immediate impact as a 9th grader, winning the 200 IM (2:13.39). The Shamrocks' Kayla Effinger was her usual, talented self in capturing the 50 Free (24.73) and the 100 Free (54.54). Freshman Emily Moser of Fishers and junior Erin Moe of Westfield had a pair of match races--Moser edged Moe to win the 200 Free (1:56.13), but Moe said, "Not so fast" in the 500 Free, topping Moser by four-tenths of a second--with both under the old meet record--to claim the blue ribbon (5:05.59).
The Tigers return to action on November 29th, when the girls are joined by the boys for the first time this season as they host Delta.

Beaver showcased outstanding underwater work en route to Yorktown's only event victory of the day in the 100 Back. Beaver held off impressive Westfield freshman Emily Verbrugge (59.54 to 59.87), with both swimmers bettering Beaver's old record of 1:00.51 set on her father's birthday at the 2009 meet. Larah now owns the 100 Back record at the Westfield and Homestead Invitationals, the sectional, the Hoosier Heritage Conference, and both YHS and Yorktown Swim Club.
The next best finish of the day for the Lady Tigers was 3rd place--by Beaver in the 200 IM (2:19.53), by junior Jessica Extine in the 100 Fly (1:04.83), and by the 200 Medley Relay 'A' quartet of juniors Caroline Grasso and Kersea Gable, Extine and Beaver (1:57.76).
Freshman Lauren Elston continues to impress in her first few meets as Tiger. Elston was right on Extine's heels in the 100 Fly, touching the wall in 4th (1:05.12). Lauren would go on to add a 6th place effort in the 100 Free (59.96).
Several other Yorktown athletes posted Top 10 efforts at Westfield. The 'B' entrant in the 200 Medley Relay, freshman Katie Keller, senior Chelsea Watters, Elston and junior Ashley Sexton, finished in 10th place (2:09.50). Junior Caroline Grasso swam to 6th place efforts in the 200 Free (2:13.27) and 100 Back (1:04.53). Senior Sam Mahon (149.15) and junior Ellie Smith (133.10) placed 5th and 9th, respectively, in the diving competition. Both the 'A' and 'B' groupings in the 200 Free Relay cracked the Top 10. The 'A' team of Sexton, junior Macey Taylor, Gable and senior Erin Moreno was 7th (1:56.86), with Keller, senior Kirsten Nickoli, freshman Bailey Windell and freshman Katelyn Grasso 10th (2:01.16).
Two Lady Tigers cracked the Top 10 in the 100 Breast--Gable was 7th (1:21.96), Katelyn Grasso was 9th (1:23.33). And both of Yorktown's 400 Free Relay entries got to the wall in the Top 10. The 'A' version of Elston, Caroline Grasso, Extine and Beaver grabbed 6th (3:59.47), with the 'B' squad of Chelsea Watters, Katelyn Grasso, Moreno and Taylor 10th (4:26.20)
Swimmers from other schools also put on a show for the overflow crowd. Westfield's Emily Verbrugge showed that she'll make an immediate impact as a 9th grader, winning the 200 IM (2:13.39). The Shamrocks' Kayla Effinger was her usual, talented self in capturing the 50 Free (24.73) and the 100 Free (54.54). Freshman Emily Moser of Fishers and junior Erin Moe of Westfield had a pair of match races--Moser edged Moe to win the 200 Free (1:56.13), but Moe said, "Not so fast" in the 500 Free, topping Moser by four-tenths of a second--with both under the old meet record--to claim the blue ribbon (5:05.59).
The Tigers return to action on November 29th, when the girls are joined by the boys for the first time this season as they host Delta.

WILDCATS WHIP TIGERS IN SEASON OPENER
The Lawrence North Wildcats used the combination of strong talent and superior depth to put a shellacking on the #15 Yorktown Tigers last night, easily defeating YHS 115-71.
The Tigers were led by the usual cast of characters--senior Larah Beaver and juniors Jessica Extine and Caroline Grasso were multiple event winners for Yorktown. Beaver took top honors in the 200 IM (2:18.67) and 100 Free (55.16); Extine won the 50 Free (25.27); Grasso topped the field in the 100 Back (1:01.33). Those three girls joined freshman Lauren Elston on the victorious 400 Free Relay squad (3:48.90), which swam with pride at a point in the meet where the outcome had already been determined. The YHS quartet swam away from a talented LN squad, beating them by almost seven seconds to end an otherwise disappointing evening on a high note.
There were several other promising swims by the Tigers last night. The 200 Medley Relay team of Beaver, junior Kersea Gable, Extine and Elston turned in a 2nd place finish (1:56.42). Look for coach Laura Slight to tinker with her personnel on this relay through the early part of the season, in an effort to find the best combination of swimmers in the strongest order. I've said it before, and I'll say it again--our BEST lineup in this event can compete with just about anyone in Indiana, and has the potential to be a Top 8 finisher at the State Meet in February. But ONLY with the right four swimmers in the right four strokes.
Both Extine and Elston were part of the closest and most exciting race of the evening. They battled stroke-for-stroke with LN's Maya Lee (just a freshman)throughout the 100 Fly, with Lee surging just enough at the finish to outtouch the field to win (1:02.81). Extine, reminiscent of Michael Phelps at the 2008 Olympics, used one final, quick mini-stroke to nip the gliding Elston at the wall for 2nd (1:03.46 to 1:03.47)!
The 200 Free Relay combo of Watters, senior Erin Moreno, and juniors Macey Taylor and Ashley Sexton got to the wall in 2nd place (1:57.64). Caroline Grasso provided badly needed points with a solid 3rd place showing in the 100 Free (56.60). Senior co-captain Chelsea Watters swam hard to the finish in the 200 IM, coming from behind to nip LN's Meredith Gentry for 4th by just five-hundredths of a second. Chelsea also scored in the 100 Breast (4th in 1:20.78). Sexton was 4th in the 50 Free (28.43), and Gable swam to 3rd in an "off" event in the torturous 500 Free (6:09.49).
The freshman Lady Tigers also started making their mark on the program. Bailey Windell scored her first varsity point with a 5th in the 200 Free (2:21.44); Laura Eaton also tallied her first varsity point with a 5th place finish in the 500 Free (6:18.37); Katie Keller added two points with a 4th place effort in the 100 Back (1:09.29); and Katelyn Grasso took her first step toward her first letter in the 100 Breast, finishing 5th (1:20.88).
This Yorktown team's problem continues to be depth. The Tigers were outscored 13-3 in BOTH the 200 Free and 200 Breast. We have scoring studs at the top of our lineup, but we fall off the cliff after that. Mid-level swimmers will have to step up and improve their scoring ability for the rest of the dual meet portion of the season to be successful.
The Tigers won't have much time to rest or prepare for their next battle. They're right back at it on Saturday morning, when they compete in the tough Westfield Invitational.

HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING 101
For those of you who are new to high school swimming here in Indiana, let's go over how a meet is scored.
There are 12 events in a meet--eight individual swimming events, three swimming relays, and diving. The individual events are scored on the following basis: 1st place-6 points, 2nd place-4 points, 3rd place-3 points, 4th place-2 points, and 5th place-1 point. That's why a seemingly insignificant race for 5th and 6th place at the end of an event can be CRITICAL to the outcome of a meet. A two-point swing is on the line every time that happens. Cheer hard for those kids!
The relays are worth more. They are scored on the following basis: 1st place-8 points, 2nd place-4 points, and 3rd place-2 points. Keep in mind that a school may only score with TWO of its relay teams in an event. That means if Yorktown finishes 1-2-3 in the 200 Medley Relay, we only get credit for 12 points. Our opponent's best finishing relay team would get the two 3rd place points; our opponent wouldn't score if they didn't have a team entered in that event.
There are a maximum number of 186 points scored in a dual meet. That makes 94 the magic number. Once the Tigers reach 94 points, they have clinched victory. And yes, there are meets that end tied 93-93!
Let's hope YHS gets a LOT more than 94 tomorrow night at Lawrence North.

It's time to dust off that cushioned seat back and hit the interstate, the start of the 2011-12 Yorktown High School swimming (and diving) season has arrived. The #15 Lady Tigers travel to unranked (but dangerous) Lawrence North on Thursday to tangle with the Lady Wildcats in the lidlifter for both squads.
Don't let the Wildcats' lack of a pre-season ranking fool you, LN is still plenty good heading into action tomorrow. True, they graduated studs Julie Ogden and Meghan Anderson from last year's team that finished 15th at the IHSAA State Meet. Ogden was the biggest loss--she parlayed a state championship in the 100 Fly into a college career at West Virginia. But this year's LN group packs lots of firepower.
Senior Peyton Cunningham, juniors Taryn Anderson and Laura Weiss, and sophomore Laura Apple all competed on the Wildcats' state team a year ago. It's worth remembering that they scored at the Nat, and they form a talented nucleus for Mike Parratto's team. Look for Anderson to be a force again in the 100 backstroke; Weiss is one of the strongest breaststrokers in this part of the state; and both Cunningham and Apple can bring it in the freestyle events.
Yorktown will counter with proven, state caliber firepower of its own. Senior Larah Beaver, juniors Jessica Extine, Kersea Gable, Caroline Grasso and Ashley Sexton, and freshman Lauren Elston are all capable of dominating races and scoring a LOT of points, both individually and on relays. Throw in the scoring depth of seniors Kirsten Nickoli, Chelsea Watters and freshmen Katie Keller and Katelyn Grasso, and it should be a VERY competitive meet. If both schools stack their 200 Medley Relay teams, you won't want to miss the first race of the night--it'll be FAST!
Diving will also play a role in Yorktown's chances to win tomorrow. Senior Sam Mahon and junior Ellie Smith will be counted on to score valuable points in the diving well, both against LN, and for the rest of the season. Diving is only eight percent of a swimming meet in Indiana, but it can make--or BREAK--a team's chances for overall success.
It will be very interesting to see how first-year coach Laura Slight lines up her Yorktown athletes on Thursday. Will she go with a power lineup that groups the studs on the 'A' relays to chase the extra points awarded in those events? Or will she spread out her most talented swimmers, hoping that they can pull weaker relay squads to victory while keeping them in their best individual events? Only time will tell. I can't wait to find out.
Thursday's meet begins at 5:30 p.m. in the beautiful Lawrence North pool on the north side of the LN campus.

BEAVER BECOMES A CARDINAL!
Larah Beaver signs with Ball State on November 15thYorktown swimmer Larah Beaver will be trading her Tiger stripes for Cardinal claws next year. The YHS and YSC star has accepted a full athletic scholarship offer from Ball State University, and will compete for the Cardinals beginning in August of 2012.
Beaver carries on the Yorktown tradition, following a long line of former Tigers into NCAA swimming. She is a multiple National and Junior National qualifier, a three-time National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA) All-American, a two-time Indiana Swimming state champion, and an IHSAA All-State performer.
Join us in congratulating Larah for her outstanding achievement as she and the rest of the Lady Tigers open their IHSAA season this Thursday at Lawrence North.

TIGERS POISED FOR STRONG SEASON
The muscles are aching, the joints are sore, and they're going to bed before 9:00 p.m. And that can only mean that the start of the 2011-12 Yorktown High School swimming and diving season is RIGHT around the corner.
The #15 Lady Tigers return their strongest team since the IHSAA State Runner-up squad of 2005-06 (those were the halcyon days of Maggie Bird, Jill Lockhart, Kelsi Hall, et al). This year's team includes one returning
All-American (Larah Beaver), two returning sectional champions (Beaver and Jessica Extine), and five returning State Meet team members (Beaver, Extine, Kersea Gable, Caroline Grasso and Ashley Sexton).
Beaver will be the favorite to repeat her sectional titles--and make strong runs at possible state titles this season--in the 100 back and 100 free. The senior enters her final YHS campaign with times in the those two events (and the 50 free) that already surpass the IHSAA state cuts for the '11-12 season. Look for Larah to take aim at the YHS school records in the 100 back, 100 free and 200 IM before her days are done.
Extine is the Tigers' other stud. The junior is the defending sectional champ in the 50 free, and Jess' career best time in the 50 is already under the IHSAA state cut. Extine will also be the favorite to double-up at the sectional in February by winning her first title in the 100 fly. My prediction? Jess will shatter the qualifying standard in the fly, and compete in those two individual events at the State Meet at the IU Natatorium. I predict Extine will score in both events at State, and nail down a Top 8 finish in the 50.
The Lady Tigers are hardly a two-girl team this season, though. Juniors Kersea Gable and Caroline Grasso teamed with Beaver and Extine to tie the YHS school record (1:49.91) in the 200 medley relay last February. If those four stay healthy (and continue to comprise the relay quartet), look for them to SMASH the record by as much as two seconds before this season is over! A time that fast would put them in contention to win a sectional relay championship, and perhaps post a Top 8 performance at State.
Grasso is coming off her best season as a Tiger, finishing as the sectional runner-up to Beaver in the 100 back. Caroline is capable of surpassing the state cut in the back (58.81) again, and being a strong contributor in the sprint relays, too. Gable is the Tigers' top returning breaststroker--look for her to score a lot of points in that event and in the medley relay. And Sexton provides YHS with quality depth, especially in the sprints and short relays.
Depth--SCORING depth--is critical in the sport of swimming, and that's where some departures could hurt the Tigers. Replacing the points scored last year by Brooke Sigler and Chappell Railey (who both chose not to compete this season) will be difficult, especially in the 200 free and 500 free. But that's where people like seniors Kirsten Nickoli and Chelsea Watters come in. The co-captains will have to step it up this season and score more points to compensate for the loss of Sigler and Railey, especially in the "BIG" meets of the season.
Finally, you'll be seeing valuable contributions from the group of freshmen girls this season. Lauren Elston is destined to be the next of Yorktown's "IT" girls--a future stud to be sure in the 100 fly, following in the Uggs footsteps of stars like Mitsch, Bird, Lockhart, Hall, Kowalski, Bevans, Long, Beaver and Extine. Fellow freshmen Kaitlyn Grasso and Katie Keller are also good enough right now to pile up the points, especially in dual meets. You'll be hearing and seeing their names a lot between now and February.
Coach Laura Slight's girls open their season on November 17th at Lawrence North, and then tangle with a loaded field that includes #9 Brebeuf, #18 Fishers, and #31 Westfield (along with Lafayette Jeff and Roncalli) at the Westfield Invitational on November 19th.

The #15 Lady Tigers return their strongest team since the IHSAA State Runner-up squad of 2005-06 (those were the halcyon days of Maggie Bird, Jill Lockhart, Kelsi Hall, et al). This year's team includes one returning
All-American (Larah Beaver), two returning sectional champions (Beaver and Jessica Extine), and five returning State Meet team members (Beaver, Extine, Kersea Gable, Caroline Grasso and Ashley Sexton).
Beaver will be the favorite to repeat her sectional titles--and make strong runs at possible state titles this season--in the 100 back and 100 free. The senior enters her final YHS campaign with times in the those two events (and the 50 free) that already surpass the IHSAA state cuts for the '11-12 season. Look for Larah to take aim at the YHS school records in the 100 back, 100 free and 200 IM before her days are done.
Extine is the Tigers' other stud. The junior is the defending sectional champ in the 50 free, and Jess' career best time in the 50 is already under the IHSAA state cut. Extine will also be the favorite to double-up at the sectional in February by winning her first title in the 100 fly. My prediction? Jess will shatter the qualifying standard in the fly, and compete in those two individual events at the State Meet at the IU Natatorium. I predict Extine will score in both events at State, and nail down a Top 8 finish in the 50.
The Lady Tigers are hardly a two-girl team this season, though. Juniors Kersea Gable and Caroline Grasso teamed with Beaver and Extine to tie the YHS school record (1:49.91) in the 200 medley relay last February. If those four stay healthy (and continue to comprise the relay quartet), look for them to SMASH the record by as much as two seconds before this season is over! A time that fast would put them in contention to win a sectional relay championship, and perhaps post a Top 8 performance at State.
Grasso is coming off her best season as a Tiger, finishing as the sectional runner-up to Beaver in the 100 back. Caroline is capable of surpassing the state cut in the back (58.81) again, and being a strong contributor in the sprint relays, too. Gable is the Tigers' top returning breaststroker--look for her to score a lot of points in that event and in the medley relay. And Sexton provides YHS with quality depth, especially in the sprints and short relays.
Depth--SCORING depth--is critical in the sport of swimming, and that's where some departures could hurt the Tigers. Replacing the points scored last year by Brooke Sigler and Chappell Railey (who both chose not to compete this season) will be difficult, especially in the 200 free and 500 free. But that's where people like seniors Kirsten Nickoli and Chelsea Watters come in. The co-captains will have to step it up this season and score more points to compensate for the loss of Sigler and Railey, especially in the "BIG" meets of the season.
