HOOSIER HERITAGE CONFERENCE-BOYS

The other day, I put together a list of the Top 10 girls performances so far this season in the Hoosier Heritage Conference. Now, it's the boys' turn for a little analysis with only 17 days to go before the HHC Meet finals at New Palestine.

This is by no means a complete analysis--the Top 12 placers score points at the conference meet, not just those in the 1st through 10th positions. The biggest variable will be the lineups--who will capture those crucial mid-place positions that pile up so many points for a team (and will likely determine the outcome in January)?

But for the sake of starting the conversation, here you go:

200 Medley Relay--1. Yorktown 1:41.00, 2. Greenfield-Central 1:45.79, 3. Pendleton Heights 1:48.57, 4. New Palestine 1:49.58, 5. Mt. Vernon 1:50.64, 6. Delta 1:53.19, 7. Shelbyville 1:56.26, 8. Rushville 2:14.87.

200 Free Relay--1. Yorktown 1:31.21, 2. Greenfield-Central 1:32.81, 3. Pendleton Heights 1:37.06, 4. Mt. Vernon 1:41.51, 5. Delta 1:41.62, 6. Shelbyville 1:45.17, 7. New Palestine 1:48.86, 8. Rushville 1:49.97.

100 Back--1. Adam Voss (Y) 55.81, 2. Jacob Childress (PH) 56.86, 3. Austin Wilburn (GC) 59.86, 4. Bailey Willoughby (GC) 1:00.10, 5. Bryan Forbes (GC) 1:00.92, 6. David Hantz (MV) 1:01.13, 7. Michael Heavilon (Y) 1:01.29, 8. Josh Cummins (GC) 1:01.30, 9. Andrzej Kedziora (PH) 1:02.47, 10. Alex Zimmerman (D) 1:04.89.

100 Breast--1. Hunter Hoffman (Y) 1:01.15, 2. Jon McCormick (GC) 1:06.58, 3. Austin Parrish (PH) 1:08.56, 4. Kenny Gilpin (MV) 1:09.73, 5. Jonathan Lindman (MV) 1:10.07, 6. Alec Booth (S) 1:10.67, 7. Patrick Stutz (GC) 1:10.91, 8. Stephen Dickerson (GC) 1:11.84, 9. Jake Uppfalt (NP) 1:12.17, 10. Bryan Forbes (GC) 1:12.51.

400 Free Relay--1. Yorktown 3:19.85, 2. Greenfield-Central 3:26.80, 3. Pendleton Heights 3:47.72, 4. Mt. Vernon 3:47.79, 5. Shelbyville 3:48.20, 6. New Palestine 3:49.77, 7. Delta 3:50.01, 8. Rushville 4:26.01.

Yorktown appears to have just enough strength to contend for the boys championship--YHS has the best performance of the season in ALL 11 swimming events. But their margin could be razor thin, because athletes are limited to participating in either three relays and one individual event, or two and two. And their victory is definitely not a certainty, because Greenfield-Central has a load of potential scoring depth. I'd go so far as to call the Cougars the favorites, and here's why.

Take a look at how many points GC stands to haul in if they choose to load up in their individual events and "settle" for 2nd in all three relays. The Cougars could very well put three swimmers in the top four in the 200 IM, the 50 free and 100 fly. That would be the rough equivalent of winning two of the relays and scoring well in the third--without using up the swimmers to do it.

In fact, this year's Greenfield-Central boys team is eerily similar to the Mt. Vernon girls team that won the HHC title two seasons ago. They don't have many great swimmers, but they have a ton of very good ones. MV won only ONE event in the 2009 meet, the 200-yard freestyle relay, but used superior scoring depth in the other events to capture the championship by 23.5 points.

It appears Yorktown will have to have at least one of its best swimmers (and perhaps two) forgo an individual event to fortify the Tigers' relay squads. That's gonna be a tough call for the boys and head coach Matt Routh to make, because it would require individual sacrifices from SENIORS for the sake of the team. But IF Yorktown can win all three relays (worth double the points of an individual event) and ALSO make a clean sweep of all the individual events in which they'll probably be seeded first, they just might pull this off.

Either way, Saturday, January 15th promises to be one VERY INTERESTING day. See you there, YHS fans.

LATEST RANKINGS PUBLISHED

The Indiana High School Swim Coaches Association has released its final swimming rankings of 2010. The Yorktown boys have moved up to 14th in the state as they head into the 2011 portion of their season. The Lady Tigers have slipped a bit--they find themselves in a three-way tie for 28th (with Lake Central and Penn).

Here's how the Top 20's shake out heading toward New Year's Day (teams from the Hoosier Heritage Conference and our Sectional fields are in bold):

Boys Top 20 Rankings--1. Carmel 218, 2. Bloomington South 160, 3. Northridge 151, 4. Munster 134, 5. Indianapolis North Central 133, 6. Chesterton 130, 7. Hamilton Southeastern 126, 8. Zionsville 122, 9. Westfield 107, 10. Homestead 103, 11. Castle 85, 12. Concord 77, 13. Franklin 54, 14. YORKTOWN 50, 15. Floyd Central 49, 16. Crown Point 45, 17. Jeffersonville 44, 18. Michigan City 41, 19. Terre Haute South 37, Carroll (Ft. Wayne) 36.

Girls Top 20 Rankings--1. Carmel 398, 2. tie-Center Grove and Homestead 183, 4. Chesterton 161, 5. Indianapolis North Central 125, 6. Zionsville 114, 7. Noblesville 110, 8. Munster 108, 9. Fishers 106, 10. Columbus North 87, 11. Mt. Vernon (Posey) 74, 12. Crown Point 65, 13. Concord 49, 14. Northridge 42, 15. Lawrence North 40, 16. McCutcheon 39, 17. Wawasee 34, 18. Plymouth 30, 19. Avon 29, 20. Twin Lakes 24.

If a lot of those names look familiar, there's a good reason for that--Yorktown swims a very tough regular season schedule. The boys have already faced four of the current Top 20, and they'll take on HSE in the first round of the IHSAA tournament. The impact is even more profound for the girls. The ladies from YHS have competed against six opponents in the current Top 20, with Fishers further down the road.

We'll be using the term "battle tested" to describe the Tigers when they take on some of the best teams in all of Indiana in February.

HOOSIER HERITAGE CONFERENCE--GIRLS

Three weeks from today, the Yorktown boys and girls will join their seven Hoosier Heritage Conference rivals for the 2011 HHC Meet at New Palestine High School. It's one of the premier events of the season, and the kids (and fans) really get revved up in the battle for conference supremacy. It's hard to believe we've already gotten that far in the 2010-11 schedule, but it's right around the corner.

The future looks bright for both Yorktown squads in January. Coach Matt Routh's teams have strung together some impressive performances this season--they've put themselves in position to contend for both HHC championships again next month.

As promised, here's a look at the Top 10 reported times in the HHC by event, beginning with the girls. I'll add the boys in the coming days.

The Lady Tigers have enough firepower to bring home the HHC trophy after a two-year hiatus. But the lineup used by coach Routh will ultimately determine whether they get the job done. He has two options--the first is to allow his top performers to swim in two individual events each, and on two relays. The other option is to force all of his top performers to swim on THREE relays in an effort to maximize their scoring potential (because relays are worth double points). All of Yorktown's relays would be seeded first if the meet were held today.

I believe YHS can utilize the first strategy and still emerge the champions, but ONLY if the half-dozen strongest members of the team swim in their BEST events, and WIN them. Yorktown has the very real potential to finish 1-2 in the 100-yard backstroke; that would score nearly as many points as a relay victory, making the move a win-win for the team.

Greenfield-Central appears to be in a strong position to challenge Yorktown for the top spot, with Mt. Vernon also in the hunt. Things should be very interesting 21 days from now. See you there.

GO TIGERS!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I'd like to wish each and every one of you a Merry Christmas, and for your support of this site and of our Tiger swimmers.

These kids work INCREDIBLY hard, day in and day out. And they're going through the toughest portion of their season right now--they're swimming more yardage, with about FOUR hours of rest between practices instead of the usual EIGHT they get when school is in session. Add to that the fact that most of their peers are off taking it easy during Christmas break, and you can see why swimmers are a unique and special breed.

Have a great couple of days away from the pool, come back on Monday refreshed and ready to attack another week of workouts, and build the foundation that will take you far in February.

SOME HOLIDAY READING

Now that we've gotten to the part of the season that is long on hard work, and short on races (the December Doldrums, perhaps?), I'm gonna have a little fun.

In the coming days, I'll be taking a look at the best times so far this season in both the Hoosier Heritage Conference, and the 2011 Sectional fields. We'll see where the Tigers stack up against other HHC members as the conference meet approaches, and how the first round of the state tournament might shake out at Hamilton Southeastern and Fishers.

Stay tuned, and as always ...

MILLERS SWEEP TIGERS

The Noblesville Millers made relatively easy work of the Yorktown Tigers Friday night, sweeping a coed meet down in Hamilton County. The Lady Millers topped the Tigers 115-70, while the boys defeated YHS 110-70.

The Yorktown girls managed only three victories, all of them in individual events. Junior Larah Beaver was a double winner, bringing home blue ribbons in the 100-yard freestyle (54.26) and the 100-yard backstroke (59.53). Sophomore Jessica Extine was the other top YHS finisher, beating the field to the wall in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.08).

Extine came within an eyelash of bringing home two golds, losing the 200-yard IM to Noblesville's Marley Cripe (2:19.74 to 2:19.77). The other razor thin margin came in the 50-yard freestyle, with the Millers' Rachel Thompson edging YHS sophomore Caroline Grasso (26.34 to 26.55).

On the boys side of the ledger, seniors Adam Voss and Hunter Hoffman went double-gold on the evening. Voss coasted to a nearly seven-second victory in the 200-yard IM (2:02.09), and added his other first place effort in the 500-yard freestyle (4:52.81). Hoffman continued his string of strong performances in the 50-yard freestyle, picking up another blue ribbon in 21.68. Hoffman's other win came in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.18.

Senior Tyler Donges chipped in with the other Tiger individual victory of the meet, scoring 199.25 to win the
1-meter diving competition.

The "Men in Green" also claimed victory to open the meet, winning the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:43.67. I can't tell you who swam on that relay because I was late arriving in Noblesville (thanks to that AWESOME rush-hour traffic on I-465!). My apologies, guys.

The Tigers will be away from competition for a couple of weeks now as they enter Holiday Intensive Training over Christmas break. Some might be tempted to call it Special Holiday Intensive Training for obvious reasons, but the work will pay off in February, kids!

LATEST COACHES POLLS RELEASED

The Indiana High School Swim Coaches Association has released its new rankings. The Tiger boys find themselves #17 with 42 rating points this week following their performances at the Homestead Invitational. The girls have dropped into a four-way tie for #27 with 17 rating points (with Concord, Terre Haute South and Hoosier Heritage Conference rival Mt. Vernon).

The IHSSCA polls reflect a mythical State Meet, and are based on the reported career-best results of swimmers and divers, regardless of the season in which they occur.

Yorktown's next opponent is also ranked this week. The Noblesville boys are 45th in the state, with the powerful Lady Millers 6th. The two schools are scheduled to knock heads at 6:30 Friday night in Noblesville.

GO TIGERS!

A MEET RECORD, A SHOT ACROSS THE BOW

One Yorktown Tiger took down a meet record, and another Tiger fired a warning shot across the bow of a defending state champion Saturday at the Homestead Invitational in Ft. Wayne.

Junior All-American Larah Beaver had the performance of the day for YHS, leading three athletes under the Invitational record in the 100-yard backstroke. Beaver bested a strong field to claim victory in 57.61. Amy Katz of Indianapolis North Central and Hannah House of Homestead also broke the old record time of 58.42 set by Amber Molina of Indianapolis North Central in 2005. House was disqualified for a false start, but she was right in the race all the way to the wall. Beaver, Katz and House are going to be formidable in the IHSAA tournament in February.

Beaver also put up a 3rd place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, going a season-best 53.63.

Sophomore Jessica Extine had the only other individual Top 10 finishes for the Lady Tigers. Extine was 6th in the 50-yard freestyle (25.44) and 9th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.37).

All three of the girls 'A' relay teams posted season-best times on Saturday, too. The 200-yard medley relay team of sophomore Caroline Grasso, sophomore Kersea Gable, Beaver and Extine went 1:56.28 for a 6th place finish. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Grasso, Beaver, Extine and senior Gabby LaVoie teamed up for a 5th place finish in 1:45.05. And in the 400-yard freestyle relay, the combo of Extine, Grasso, junior Brooke Sigler and Beaver hit the wall in 3:50.37 to place 5th. That race included an impressive 52.94 anchor split by Beaver.

The YHS boys made some noise of their own in Allen County on Saturday, especially senior Hunter Hoffman. He went toe-to-toe with defending state 50-yard freestyle champion Tyler Fozkos of Chesterton. Hoffman and the "Rocket from the Region" were in adjacent lanes, and Hoffman shook off a relatively slow start to close on the Fastest Man in Indiana down the stretch. Fozkos managed to outtouch Hoffman to win the event in 21.31, but Hunter was right on his you-know-what inside the flags and finished 2nd in a season-best 21.41! Can't wait for the anticipated rematch for all the marbles at the Nat in February, fellas.

Hoffman added another Top 10 finish to his day, going 1:01.15 for a 3rd place effort in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Senior Adam Voss also posted a pair of Top 10 individual finishes at Homestead, going 1:46.49 in the 200-yard freestyle and 52.42 in the 100-yard butterfly for 4th in both events.

In the relays, the quartet of Voss, Hoffman, senior Michael Heavilon and freshman Scott Heavilon was 5th in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:41.00; the same four boys were 5th in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:31.21); and they combined efforts again in the 400-yard freestyle relay to race to an early lead, only to fade late to settle for 5th in 3:19.85. Put another two months of tough training on them and senior Wes Gustin (who missed Saturday's meet) and head coach Matt Routh and his staff will have some serious weapons at their disposal come tournament time.

The Tigers have another five days off from competition before resuming their season on Friday night (that's not a typo), yes FRIDAY night at Noblesville. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6:30. See you there.

HOMESTEAD INVITATIONAL DETAILS

Take five schools and ten teams, ALL ranked in the Top 25 in Indiana, and we'll have some excitement tomorrow at the Homestead Invitational in Ft. Wayne. It'll be Chesterton, Homestead, Indianapolis North Central, Northridge and Yorktown duking it out for supremacy. And it will be F-A-S-T!

It looks like the weather could make travelling to Ft. Wayne difficult Saturday morning. So for those who don't want to risk the drive, or who have conflicts keeping them in Yorktown, there's another way to follow the meet. Hoosier Authority will webcast the meet live on their website, with Tony Young of Indiana Swimming providing the analysis.

GIRLS CRUISED, BOYS GET BRUISED AT ANDERSON

Quality vs. depth--it's the age old debate in swimming, and it was renewed again Tuesday night at Anderson High School as two teams put on powerful displays. The Yorktown girls won every event on their way to a whopping 140-44 victory over the Lady Indians, while the AHS boys combined high-end talent with superior depth for a 108-77 win over the previously unbeaten Tigers.

The women in green hammered their way through the AHS lineup, throwing down 1-2-3 sweeps in the 100-yard, 200-yard, and 500-yard freestyles. The Lady Tigers also went 1-2 in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay. It was a very impressive performance--in fact, the YHS girls are AVERAGING 124 points during their four-meet winning streak over Delta, New Palestine, Pendleton Heights and Anderson.

Yorktown had three individual double winners on the night--junior Larah Beaver in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.22) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.41), the latter a drop of nearly four seconds from her previous lifetime best; junior Brooke Sigler in the 200-yard freestyle (2:12.26) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:51.15), the latter yet another time drop in the 500; and sophomore Jessica Extine in the 200-yard IM (2:22.60) and the 100-yard freestyle (56.74).

Other individual winners for the Tigers included sophomore Caroline Grasso in the 50-yard freestyle (26.84), junior Sam Mahon in diving, and sophomore Kersea Gable in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:17.59). Gable showed the heart of a racer coming home in the breast, surging in the last 25 to nip her Anderson rival by just six hundredths of a second. Way to hang tough, Kersea!

The girls also brought home the gold in all three relays. The 200-yard medley relay quartet of Grasso, Gable, Beaver and Extine posted a 1:57.34; the 200-yard freestyle relay combo of Grasso, Gable, sophomore Ashley Sexton and senior Gabby LaVoie went 1:51.92; and in the 400-yard freestyle relay, the squad of Extine, Sexton, Sigler and Beaver reached the wall in 4:03.30.

Yorktown built a narrow 33-29 lead through the evening's first four events for the boys. But Anderson capitalized on YHS' lack of competitors in diving to go 1-2-4 and take a 41-36 advantage into the second "half" of the meet. Yorktown managed to keep the deficit at five points after the butterfly, but the Indians widened their lead in each of the next four events to put the clamps on the Tigers.

The boys meet was evenly split in terms of event winners, with both the Tigers and Indians taking six blue ribbons. The difference in the boys competition was depth, or more accurately, scoring depth. Anderson finished no worse than 2nd and 3rd behind every Yorktown event winner; the Indians went 2-3-4 in the 100-yard backstroke.

Two YHS boys were double individual winners--senior Adam Voss captured the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.14) and the 100-yard butterfly (53.14), while fellow senior Hunter Hoffman was the top dog in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.11) and the 50-yard freestyle (in a season-best sizzling 21.61)! Yorktown has had two state champions in the 50 free (Kyle Routh and Eric Mattingly), and Hoffman is showing signs that he has what it takes to make a serious bid to become the third one in February.

Senior Michael Heavilon was the other Tiger to pick up a 1st place finish, topping the field in the 100-yard backstroke (52.23). The only other Yorktown victory came in the 200-yard medley relay (1:42.41).

Anderson's boys served notice last night that they will be a force to be reckoned with at the Fishers Sectional in February. Anyone taking them too lightly will be making a big mistake.

Next up for Yorktown is Saturday's Homestead Invitational in Ft. Wayne. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. But get there way before that, because seats go fast for one of the best meets of the season anywhere in Indiana.

YORKTOWN AT ANDERSON PREVIEW

The red hot Yorktown Tigers hit the road again tonight for the short trip to Anderson with one major goal in mind--keep swimming some smokin' hot early season times against the Anderson Indians.

The meet is a homecoming of sorts for the former Highland Scots now wearing Yorktown green. They'll be back in their hometown, swimming against some former teammates and former AHS rivals. Now they get to do it with a big block 'Y' on their caps. It should be a special night for those kids, who are doing a great job on this side of the Madison-Delaware County line.

This meet is a final tuneup of sorts for the big enchilada coming up on Saturday--the Homestead Invitational. It's one of the most competitive meets of the regular season anywhere in Indiana. Take a half-dozen top quality teams, throw them in the same pool in front of a capacity crowd on a cold December day, and it'll be as exciting as most Sectional meets in February. But I digress.

Tonight's coed dual meet with Anderson is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m at the AHS pool.

TIGERS DEMOLISH ARABIANS IN SWEEP

If there was any doubt before last night about whether Yorktown can win Hoosier Heritage Conference championships again this season, there shouldn't be any now. For the third straight meet, the Tigers made easy work of an HHC opponent, sweeping Pendleton Heights in the YHS pool. The Lady Tigers whipped the outnumbered Arabians 125-60, while the boys dispatched PH 110-64.

The girls won every swimming event in the meet, allowing only PH diver Hannah Cochran to take top honors on the board (229.00). Yorktown sophomore Jessica Extine had the best meet of her YHS career, nipping PH senior Autumn Brown in the 50-yard freestyle (25.68-25.86) before blowing away the Auburn recruit in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.10-1:04.48). It was Extine's coming of age moment against an arch rival, one she's likely to see again at both the HHC meet in January, and the Hamilton Southeastern Sectional in February.

The Lady Tigers had two other individual double winners on the night. Junior Larah Beaver easily won the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.84) and 100-yard freestyle (54.85); sophomore Caroline Grasso made it a double-dip in the 200-yard IM (2:29.56) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.88). The girls had two other individual champions--sophomore Kersea Gable took top honors in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:21.15), and junior Brooke Sigler captured the 500-yard freestyle in a season-best 5:52.29. Sigler has dropped time each time she has swum the 500 this season--outstanding job, Brooke!

The girls also made a statement in winning all three relays. The 200-yard medley relay squad of Grasso, Gable, Beaver and Extine won gold by nearly 14 seconds (1:59.23); the 200-yard freestyle relay of Grasso, Gable, sophomore Ashley Sexton and senior Gabby LaVoie got to the wall first (1:52.29); and the quartet of Extine, Sexton, Sigler and Beaver grabbed victory by more than 18 seconds in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:59.45).

The Yorktown boys weren't about to be outdone by their prettier counterparts. The "Old Men" came through again--seniors Adam Voss, Michael Heavilon and Hunter Hoffman each won a pair of individual titles on the evening. Voss took the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.17) and 500-yard freestyle (5:02.96); Heavilon put up blue ribbon efforts in the 200-yard IM (2:12.16) and the 100-yard freestyle (51.38); and Hoffman continued to blister the water in the 50-yard freestyle (22.04) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.64).

The boys had two more winners in individual events Tuesday night. Sophomore Thommy Brown was the man in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.27), and senior Tyler Donges won a one-man diving competition (178.15).

The Tiger guys also topped the field in both freestyle relays. Hoffman, Brown, senior Wes Gustin and freshman Scott Heavilon outperformed their competition (1:38.48) in the 200, and it was Hoffman, the Heavilon brothers, and Voss leading the way in the 400 (3:33.75).

Yorktown has an "off" day today before hitting the road for a coed meet Thursday at Anderson High School at 5:30 p.m.

TIGERS HOST ARABIANS

They're 20 miles apart, they're in the same conference, they're in the same sectional, and they're BIG rivals. Throw in some very talented athletes on both sides, and you have the recipe for some exciting swimming tonight when Pendleton Heights visits Yorktown in a Hoosier Heritage Conference matchup. It's the third-straight HHC dual meet for the Tigers, who have polished off Delta and New Palestine over the last week.

The Arabian girls head into the contest holding down the 31st ranking in the latest Indiana High School Swimming Coaches Association poll. Yorktown's girls have dropped a few notches this week to 24th. On the boys side of the ledger, Pendleton Heights is 42nd; Yorktown is up again this week to 17th in the IHSSCA rankings, which are based on reported career best times that are used to score a mythical State Meet.

The Arabian girls are led by Auburn signee Autumn Brown, a senior capable of winning any stroke over any distance. Her forte is the sprint freestyle, but she's more than capable of a breakout swim in the back or fly, too. It remains to be seen how PHHS head coach Jeff Maydak will utilize his top talent this evening. If Brown swims the sprint free events tonight, the crowd could be in for a real treat. Brown and Yorktown's Larah Beaver and Jessica Extine have had some epic battles over the years.

The Arabian boys also have a stud in the fold. Senior Jacob Childress is ranked 7th in the state this week in the 100-yard backstroke. A potential Childress vs. Adam Voss showdown is brewing in the back. If it materializes, keep your eyes on the pool, because much of that race would be swum underwater, and it would be FAST if it happens.

Tonight's meet is scheduled to begin at 5:15 at Yorktown.

TIGERS EXTINGUISH DRAGONS

The old adage is, "Don't get mad, get even." But the Yorktown Tigers may have done a little of both last night as they defeated the New Palestine Dragons in a Hoosier Heritage Conference showdown. The men smashed New Pal 111-69, with the women right behind them at 105-81.

Both the YHS boys and girls were beaten a year ago at New Pal, which undoubtedly left a bad taste in the mouths of the Tigers. Yorktown opened last night's contest with convincing victories in both 200-yard medley relays and never looked back.

The "Old Men" of YHS received outstanding performances from seniors Adam Voss, Michael Heavilon, and Hunter Hoffman, all of whom won four blue ribbons against the Dragons. Those boys threw down some jaw dropping times for just their second meet of the young season--Voss blitzed the field in the 100-yard fly (53.06), Hoffman added a sick 48.67 in the 100-yard freestyle, and Heavilon won the 500-yard freestyle by more than 41 seconds (5:10.94). Other individual winners for Yorktown included Michael Heavilon in the 200-yard IM (2:08.69), Hoffman in the 50-yard freestyle (21.86), senior Tyler Donges in 1 meter diving (189.00), and Voss in the 100-yard backstroke (55.81). The Tiger boys also reigned in all three relays--junior Alec Durant and senior Wes Gustin joined Voss and Michael Heavilon in the 200-yard medley (1:48.01); Hoffman and Gustin teamed with sophomore Thommy Brown and freshman Scott Heavilon in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:37.32); and Hoffman and Voss sandwiched the Heavilon boys to bring home the bacon in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:25.04.

The "Dynamic Duo" of junior Larah Beaver and sophomore Jessica Extine led the way again for the Lady Tigers on Thursday night, with both tallying four first place finishes. Beaver won the 200-yard IM (2:16.86) and the 100-yard backstroke (59.69), while Extine was the class of the field in the 50-yard freestyle (25.91) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.85). Beaver and Extine joined sophomores Caroline Grasso and Kersea Gable to take gold in the 200-yard medley relay (1:57.04); Highland transfers helped carry the freight in the 400-yard freestyle relay, with sophomore Ashley Sexton and junior Brooke Sigler teaming with Beaver and Extine to win in 3:54.80. That's an eight second drop from the Delta meet two nights before, and it featured another sick anchor leg performance by Beaver--she turned a nearly three second deficit into victory by more than five seconds with a split of 53.78!

The Lady Tigers also got individual blue ribbon efforts from Grasso in the 200-yard freestyle (2:13.31), junior Sam Mahon in 1 meter diving (201.75), and Sigler in the 500-yard freestyle (5:53.24). That's a seven second drop for Brooke in two days! And sophomore Kersea Gable had the heartbreak of the night, racing stroke-for-stroke with New Pal's Jordan Rogers in the 100-yard breaststroke before being outtouched by .22 of a second.

The Tigers are swimming tired, but they're racing with great intensity and determination right now. They'll look to continue their winning ways next Tuesday night, when they host HHC arch rival Pendleton Heights at 5:15.
