HOW DO YOU MEASURE TENACITY?

Like I said before, this is Yorktown, we NEVER quit!

HOW DO YOU MEASURE HEART?

This is Yorktown, we NEVER quit!

YORKTOWN, CENTRAL SPLIT CLASH OF THE TITANS

Before we get any closer to the Sectional, let me write a few words about last Tuesday night's epic battle between arch rivals, Yorktown and Muncie Central.

The YHS girls put on a spectacular show, beating the previously undefeated Bearcats 98-88 in a hotly contested match. The Tiger boys put up a valiant fight, but fell to Central 110-73 in a show of talent and superior MC depth.

The Central parents should be applauded for the way they handled a difficult situation. They had to move their Senior Night meet, decorations, displays, etc. to Southside because of a water line problem at their own pool. That's difficult enough, but they handled it all with class--they even provided floral arrangements for the YORKTOWN seniors as part of the evening's ceremonies. They didn't have to do that, and it was a classy gesture on their part. Well done, MC!

The meet also featured one of the closest and most exciting races of the season, perhaps in all of Indiana. Yorktown senior Adam Voss came from behind in the 100-yard backstroke, using the best final turn I've ever witnessed to win by four-hundredths of a second. That performance preserved an impressive streak for Voss--he has never lost an individual event in a dual meet during his high school career! It also established a new YHS record for the event.

The Tiger boys return to action in their regular season finale Tuesday night, hosting Hamilton Heights at 5:30.

GIRLS SECTIONAL PREVIEW, TAKE 2

It's time to get amped up for the start of the IHSAA "tournament" in swimming and diving, with the Sectional prelims just four days away. So just for you swimming junkies like me, I've compiled a Top 10 list of the best performances--by event--of the season among athletes whose schools feed into our Sectional field. I have omitted diving, because so many schools switch back-and-forth from the 6-dive and 11-dive formats during the season. Yorktown's Sam Mahon should point well, though.

The times come from those reported to varvee.com, as well as research of other meet results that haven't been reported by varvee.com. Keep in mind that athletes face the same limits on participation in the tournament; a competitor can only take part in a combination of one individual event and three relays, OR two of each. An athlete CANNOT compete in three individual events. That means coaches had a lot to think about before submitting their Sectional lineups last Thursday.

Here are the Hamilton Southeastern Sectional Top 10 times of 2010-11:

GIRLS SECTIONAL PREVIEW, TAKE 1

The preliminary round of the 2011 Hamilton Southeastern Sectional is right around the corner (Thursday night). Entries were due into the IHSAA office earlier this week, and the psych sheets aren't out yet. But it's interesting to look at the Top 10 times posted this season by athletes whose teams feed into our Sectional.

Two Yorktown Tigers have the best performances in Sectional 10--junior Larah Beaver tops the potential entrants in both the 100-yard backstroke (57.61) and the 100-yard freestyle (53.63). Sophomore Jessica Extine leads the pack in the 50-yard freestyle (24.99).

Fishers appears to be the strong favorite to capture the team title next Saturday. Yorktown has an outside chance to make a run at the championship, but will probably have to settle for runner-up (IF they can top perennial power Hamilton Southeastern). But seed times don't win races, swimmers do. It should be fun to watch.

More on the Top 10's later.

UNDEFEATED BEARCATS, UNDENIABLE TIGERS

Every sports team I've ever been associated with as a player or coach has a few special games circled on its schedule--the contests that define a season, and sometimes an entire program. Winning those competitions brings on a sense of euphoria that is tough to match; losing one can crush your spirit.

TONIGHT is one of those contests.

The Muncie Central Bearcats and the Yorktown Tigers renew their long, spirited, and sometimes not-so-friendly rivalry, this time with a twist--the meet will be held at Muncie Southside because of a water line break at Central.

The Bearcats are having a monster season. Both the MC boys and girls are undefeated, and the Lady Bearcats just won the first North Central Conference championship on their side of the program's history. The girls in purple and white are loaded with young talent, headlined by freshman Emmy Rawson. She's the real deal, and probably headed to the State Meet (and perhaps scoring in it) next month.

The Bearcat men are just as good, with a blend of talented youngsters and a seasoned group of accomplished upperclassmen led by multi-event stud Dan Proctor.

The Tigers are no slouches, either. The girls are coming on strong after a fantastic performance ten days ago at New Palestine, where they reclaimed the Hoosier Heritage Conference championship for the first time since 2008. The YHS boys are still ranked among Indiana's Top 20 teams in the latest coach's poll, and have some of the best talent anywhere in this part of the state.

These schools match up extremely well in 2011--they're VERY even going into this final dual meet of the regular season for the YHS girls.

Two years ago, these teams went toe-to-toe for 15 rounds in front of a packed house before the meet was decided in the final event. If Central and Yorktown swim up to their abilities tonight, look for the same thing to happen again this evening.

MEET LOCATION CHANGED AT LAST MINUTE

Tuesday night's meet between Yorktown and Muncie Central won't happen at either school--the meet has been moved to Muncie Southside's pool, with a 6:00 p.m. start time.

Athletic Director Tom Jarvis says a water pipe at the Central pool broke, causing the change in location.

This meet could be the best and most exciting matchup of the season. Central's teams are undefeated, and nothing would taste better than serving up some humble pie to the Bearcats.

Don't miss it--it will probably be decided in the final event of the night.

GO TIGERS!

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS, WE WILL ROCK YOU!

A wise man once wrote, "They came, they saw, they conquered!" And that's exactly what the ladies of the Yorktown swimming and diving team did Saturday, as they won their school's first girls Hoosier Heritage Conference championship since 2008.

The Tigers fought off a strong challenge from host New Palestine to bring the hardware back home to Tiger Drive where it belongs, defeating the Dragons 274-246. The performance also earned YHS rookie head coach Matt Routh the HHC Coach of the Year award in the girls meet, a richly deserved honor.

YHS was led by its Dynamic Duo of junior Larah Beaver and sophomore Jessica Extine, who were both four-time winners on the day. Beaver broke her own HHC record in the 100-yard backstroke (58.04) and coasted to an easy victory in the 100-yard freestyle by nearly six seconds (54.02). Extine traded strokes and kicks with Auburn recruit Autumn Brown of Pendleton Heights over every inch of the 50-yard freestyle, winning in 24.99. Extine also claimed the blue ribbon in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.40).

Sophomores Caroline Grasso and Kersea Gable teamed up with Beaver and Extine to win the 200-yard medley relay in a season-best time of 1:54.34. In the final event of the meet, Beaver, Extine, sophomore Ashley Sexton and junior Brooke Sigler brought home the bacon in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:51.41).

Several other Tigers scored critical points--Sigler's 2nd in the 500-yard freestyle (5:46.99), Grasso's 2nd in the 100 back (1:02.64), and juniors Kirsten Nickoli (6:01.36) and Chappell Railey (6:01.71) going 4-7 in the 500 free were huge for the girls. YHS scored 29 points in the back, and 31 points in the 500, the virtual equivalent of winning two more relays!

The Tiger boys also gave a valiant effort before falling short of victory, settling for a runner-up finish to the extremely deep Greenfield-Central Cougars (303-248.5). The YHS boys were SPECTACULAR on Saturday--the Tigers won EIGHT of the dozen events in the meet, broke the only two meet records to fall on their side of the ledger, and beat the Cougars head-to-head in a majority of the events.

The best analogy I can think of is that Yorktown had the better gun, but Greenfield-Central had more bullets. The Cougars won only ONE event in the meet (200-yard freestyle relay), but rode superior depth to the team title.

The "Old Men" Tigers put on a fantastic show for the packed house. Voss, Michael Heavilon and Hunter Hoffman made their final go-round as seniors a day many fans will remember for a long time. All three were quadruple winners--Voss broke the HHC Meet records in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.32) and the 100-yard backstroke (53.44), the latter holding off former record holder Jacob Childress of Pendleton Heights to win by a tenth of a second. In fact, both Voss and Childress were more than a second faster than the former record (54.61) set in 2010!

Heavilon was also brilliant, cutting more than five seconds off his seed time in his gold medal performance in the 200-yard IM (2:03.58), and dropping jaws again in the 100-yard butterfly. All he did in that swim was go more than four seconds faster than his seed time, touching the wall in 54.17.

Hoffman continued to scorch the water in the 50-yard freestyle, besting the field in 21.54--a time that may have disappointed him, but a very good effort when the nearest sprinter was nearly 1.5 seconds behind. When Hunter gets pushed in the state tournament, WATCH OUT! Hoffman also stood atop the winner's podium in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.42.

Senior Wes Gustin and freshman Scott Heavilon also got their first HHC titles on Saturday; Gustin joined Voss, Hoffman and Michael Heavilon to win the 200-yard medley relay (1:40.45), and Scott was part of the top dog 400-yard freestyle relay with his big brother, Hoffman and Voss.

There were also several more notable performances by the YHS guys--sophomore Thommy Brown dropped more than six seconds in the 200 IM (2:22.18), freshman Kyle Rees cut more than two seconds off his seed time in the 50 free (26.31), and in the 500 free, senior Joe Eskew dropped more than 10 seconds (5:35.11), only to be outdone by freshman James Kemp. All Kemp did was swim a stunning 26 SECONDS faster than his seed time to finish in 6:01.54!

Nice job, kids. Way to go!

Results to follow shortly.

THEY DID IT!

Congratulations to the Yorktown High School girls--they gave an outstanding performance today to capture the Hoosier Heritage Conference championship for the first time since 2008.

YHS head coach Matt Routh was also named the HHC girls Coach of the Year before taking the traditonal fully clothed dip in the New Palestine pool.

We'll have more on today's meet, including the results, later this weekend.

Way to go, girls.

TIME TO LIGHT A FIRE

I've been sitting on this topic for weeks now, but with the championship season right around the corner, it's time to take the lid off.

It wasn't long ago that the words "Yorktown Tigers" struck fear in a lot of teams. One of the reasons for that was the unbelievable amount of fan support YHS teams had during the glory days of the mid-2000's. Swimming MATTERED at Yorktown, not just in the pool, not just in the school's hallways, but across the whole community. And that's why Yorktown Swimming mattered all OVER Indiana.

Where are we now? At home meets, fans sit on their hands and barely make a peep. Almost nobody bothers to cheer or yell encouragement. God forbid that we'd hear the chant of "Yorktown REE-LAAYS" (clap, clap, clap-clap-clap) before one of our squads takes to the blocks. The kids themselves don't even bother to do the infamous, pre-meet cheer that included kickboards being pounded in rhythm on the blocks to get everybody's juices flowing. I sure do miss those times.

Now it's time to do something about it. Every Yorktown fan who goes to the Hoosier Heritage Conference Meet on Saturday should wear SOMETHING green and/or black, denoting their loyalty to these awesome kids. We should be loud and proud all day long, and make that Natatorium vibrate with "YORKTOWN RELAYS" before the medley, 200 and 400. And we should yell our lungs out for every race, so our kids, the other kids, and everyone in the building knows YORKTOWN is there.

How can we demand the best from our sons and daughters if we aren't also willing to give them OUR best?

Let's revive the old traditions, start a few new ones, and show the rest of Indiana that Yorktown Swimming is back, and is here to STAY.

KICK SOME ASS, WIN CONFERENCE, GO TIGERS!!

IN CASE YOU'RE CURIOUS

Here are the projected team scores in my analysis of the theoretical boys HHC Meet:

1. Greenfield-Central 329, 2. Yorktown 258.5, 3. Pendleton Heights 179, 4. Mt. Vernon 153, 5. Shelbyville 124.5, 6. New Palestine 119, 7. Delta 117, 8. Rushville 22.

We need to give these kids, guys AND girls, all the support we can muster up on Saturday. Wear your best Yorktown apparel, and be ready to go crazy at New Pal.

CONFERENCE MEET GETS UNDERWAY TONIGHT

The 2011 edition of the Hoosier Heritage Conference Meet actually begins this evening with the diving preliminaries at New Palestine High School.

Good luck to all of the Tigers hitting the 1-meter board for the green and white tonight.

THEORETICAL HHC MEET--BOYS

This weekend's Hoosier Heritage Conference Meet will represent an uphill climb for the Yorktown boys. But it isn't because the Tigers lack for quality; their problem will be depth, especially in a couple of critical events.

Using the same methodology that I did in analyzing how the girls HHC Meet might play out, the Greenfield-Central Cougars are likely to have a strong leg up on the competition. GC doesn't have a single dominant individual, but rather, SEVERAL very good swimmers capable of finishing high and accumulating a LOT of points along the way. And they have enough of that depth that it may not matter how they line up their athletes on Saturday.

After all, YHS head coach Matt Routh has a bona fide stud in senior Adam Voss, who has the best times in the HHC this season in a whopping FIVE events. But Voss can only swim in a maximum of two individual events, so where do you plug him into the lineup? For the sake of my analysis, I put him in the 200 free and the 100 fly to maximize his points relative to GC.

Fellow senior Hunter Hoffman is the conference's best in three other events, but we run into the same problem. For the sake of discussion, I plugged him into the 50 free and 100 breast.

I tried juggling the potential lineups several different ways, and each time, Greenfield-Central leads the pack. Why? They have the potential to score with all three of their entrants in HALF of the events in the meet. And we aren't talking 10th, 11th and 12th.

The Cougars could very well finish 2-3 in the 50 free, 1-3 in diving, 2-3-4 in the 100 fly, and 1-2-4 in the 100 back! They're simply loaded for bear and any other mammal or reptile that comes along.

Yorktown is going to have to win all three relays, win EVERY event in which they enter the top seed, and most importantly, have several of the guys throw down career-best swims to score in the MIDDLE of the pack to have a realistic shot at pulling the upset.

But as I've said a thousand times, seed times and reputations don't win events, RACERS do. If the Tigers show up with their game faces on, and just go out and race, even for 12TH PLACE, they just might stay close enough to shock the world.

See you in New Pal on Saturday, and as always...

MEET CANCELLED

Tonight's meet between Yorktown and Muncie Southside has been cancelled because of the weather. No word yet on whether the meet will be made up, but with the conference meet on Thursday and Saturday, it's probably unlikely.

THEORETICAL HHC MEET--GIRLS

I've been doing a lot of heavy reading lately, checking out the best times of the season in the Hoosier Heritage Conference heading into the annual HHC Meet. And just for fun, I've run the numbers on a theoretical 2011 HHC Meet, based on the top reported times in all 12 events.

Here's my methodology--I began by assuming that all eight teams in the meet would use each of their athletes in two individual events and two relays (clearly they won't; some teams will choose to put their best athletes on THREE relays, hoping to grab the double point values in those events). But that's the first basis for an apples-to-apples comparison, especially when one of the teams in the meet lacks the numbers to field relays.

I also scored the theoretical meet based on each athlete's two best individual events; in situations where an athlete would be seeded equally high in more than one event, I scored that individual in the event where they were more likely to score more points for their team. Again, some athletes will swim "off" events to strengthen other parts of their squad's lineup. But for the sake of comparison, I went with the best two.

This is all just for fun and debate, because each coach's lineup choices will have the biggest impact on the outcome of the meet. But here's how the girls theoretical meet played out, based on best times through Christmas:

1. Yorktown 287, 2. Mt. Vernon 253, 3. Greenfield-Central 191, 4. New Palestine 184, 5. Pendleton Heights 151, 6. Delta 131, 7. Shelbyville 116, 8. Rushville 0 (Rushville began the season with only three kids on their team).

The Yorktown-Mt. Vernon showdown could be a real donnybrook again this year. The Marauders don't have as much scoring depth as they have had the last couple of years, but they still have enough to give the Tigers a run for their money. Saturday should be a very interesting day for all of us.

Later this week--a theoretical HHC Meet for the boys.

Stay tuned, and GO TIGERS!

AND THEN THERE WERE FOUR

I shortchanged Caroline Grasso in the body of the recap of the New Castle meet. Caroline also had four wins in the meet, not three (she was part of the victorious 200-yard freestyle relay squad with Kersea Gable, Ashley Sexton and Gabby LaVoie). These bleary old eyes passed you over in the agate type of the results.

Same goes for Gable, who was a double winner in the 200 relay and medley relay.

Now, let's go kick some major tail on Saturday at New Palestine.

TIGERS SWEEP TROJANS

Senior Night is one of the most emotional experiences an athlete has during his or her high school career. And the members of the YHS Class of 2011 will long remember theirs, because Thursday night's meet came down to the final event.

The Yorktown boys held an 89-82 lead over New Castle after the 100-yard breaststroke, so the outcome of the meet would depend on the finishes in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The YHS quartet of Wes Gustin, Michael Heavilon, Alec Durant and Scott Heavilon didn't disappoint, using clean exchanges to avoid a DQ, claim first place and seal the 101-84 victory for the Tigers.

It was a comeback effort that even put Yorktown in place to take top honors. New Castle won four of the first five events in the boys meet, and held a nine point lead (67-58) over the Tigers after the 500-yard freestyle. But YHS went 1-3 in the 200-yard freestyle relay to cut the Trojan lead to three (71-68), and went ahead for good (78-77) after Voss and Michael Heavilon finished 1-2 in the backstroke.

The YHS boys were led by senior triple winners Hunter Hoffman and Adam Voss. Hoffman put up first place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.09) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.47), while Voss brought home the bacon in the 100-yard freestyle (49.77) and the 100-yard backstroke (58.03). Hoffman and Voss were also part of the victorious 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:33.25) with seniors Michael Heavilon and Wes Gustin.

The YHS ladies put on an impressive performance in their first meet following what I like to call Special Holiday Intensive Training (do your own spelling on that one). ;) The girls swam dog tired, but with a lot of courage and intensity to claim a 122-63 victory on their side of the ledger. It's the fifth time this season that the girls have gone over the 100-point mark, and the fourth time they've bettered 120 points.

The Yorktown girls had several multiple event winners against the Trojans. Junior Larah Beaver and sophomore Jessica Extine topped the list with four first-place efforts each on the night. Beaver bested the field in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.68) and the 500-yard freestyle (in a lifetime best 5:29.16). Extine grabbed the blue ribbons in the 200-yard IM (2:22.31) and the 100-yard freestyle (58.26).

Sophomore Caroline Grasso was a three-time victor, getting to the wall first in both the 50-yard freestyle (26.63) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.34). Beaver, Extine and Grasso joined sophomore Kersea Gable on the winning 200-yard medley relay team (1:57.40), while Beaver and Extine shared the load with sophomore Ashley Sexton and junior Brooke Sigler as they set the pace in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:03.52).

Junior Sam Mahon was Yorktown's other individual champion, winning the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 190.84. Mahon led a 1-2-3 YHS sweep in diving, with sophomore Ellie Smith and junior Alexa Voss also pitching in to score 13 valuable points off the board.

The weary Tigers resume their 2010-11 season on Tuesday night, when they make the short trip down Cornbread Road to face Muncie Southside. The contest is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.

THEY GROW UP SO FAST!

It's hard to believe that Senior Night is already here, but we've come to the point in the season when we say a ceremonial "goodbye" to the members of the Class of 2011 and their parents.

We'll do that this evening, when the Tigers resume their dual meet season by hosting the New Castle Trojans. Expect a longer-than-normal meet, because we'll honoring 14 seniors and their families after the diving portion of the meet.

The senior girls will be swimming their FINAL races in the YHS pool tonight--the boys get one more chance to do that when they host Hamilton Heights on February 1st. But this will undoubtedly be an emotional night for all of the members of the Class of '11.

It has been a joy watching these fine young men and women grow up and mature before our very eyes, and we wish them all the best in all of their future endeavors.

Senior Girls--Brittney Bell, Jenny Burkett, Gabby LaVoie, Megan Morency, Rachel Reising, and manager Mary Hazen.

Senior Boys--Tyler Donges, Joe Eskew, Wes Gustin, Michael Heavilon, Hunter Hoffman, Joseph Railey, Joe Sours, and Adam Voss.

Tonight's meet is scheduled to begin at 5:15 in the YHS pool

GO TIGERS!
