I recently took a look at the season-best times in the Hoosier Heritage Conference. But with January just a few days away, it's not too early to start thinking about how the IHSAA Sectional might shake out in early February.

There are a couple of events that promise to be EXTREMELY close once tournament time gets here. On the girls side, FOUR sprinters find themselves just .36 of a second apart right now in the 50 Free, including defending sectional champion Jessica Extine of Yorktown.
The margins are even THINNER so far in the boys 200 Free Relay. Three teams--Anderson, Fishers and Hamilton Southeastern--are separated by only .09 of a second heading into 2012!
The next six weeks are going to be VERY interesting to say the least. Train hard, eat right, rest when you can, and keep your eyes on the prize.

WHO'S FASTEST?
Believe it or not, we're closing in FAST on the 2012 Hoosier Heritage Conference meet. The diving prelims are just 24 days from now, and the diving finals and other swimming events are only THREE WEEKS from Saturday. So I thought it would be fun to begin taking a look at the best performances of the season in the HHC.

WAYWARD MILLERS SWEEP TIGERS ON ALUMNI NIGHT
There's a new catch phrase in the Noblesville pool this morning. It's, "Hey, where's my GPS?" At least it should be after the Millers boys shook off a VERY late arrival Friday night and beat Yorktown in a coed dual meet here.
The bus carrying the NHS girls arrived on time for their warmup period. But the driver bringing the NHS BOYS to the meet got lost en route and ended up somewhere in Muncie before figuring out how to get to the meet. By that time, it was 5:40 (ten minutes past the scheduled start time) and the natives were getting restless. That includes the large number of former YHS/YSC competitors who took time out of their busy schedules to attend and cheer on the Tigers. Thanks SO much for your moral support, ladies and gentlemen!
Coach Rich Wolfred's boys put on their suits, got NO warmup in the water, and went right to work, leading Noblesville to the sweep. The Millers girls defeated Yorktown 110-75, while the NHS boys took home a 122-64 win over the Tigers.
The Lady Tigers actually put a scare into the Millers. Yorktown opened the night with big momentum, with the 200 Medley Relay team of Caroline Grasso, Jessica Extine, Lauren Elston, and Larah Beaver posting a season-best 1:54.38 to beat the Noblesville 'A' squad by nearly two seconds! In fact, Yorktown won three of the first four swimming events (Beaver in the 200 IM in 2:18.37 and Extine in the 50 Free in 25.74), and the YHS ladies led Noblesville 55-54 with only five events left in the meet.
That's when the wheels came off. YHS had to finish the meet without Caroline Grasso, who left early to fulfill another commitment. Her departure cost Yorktown dearly--there's no doubt in my mind that the 200 Free Relay team would have taken first place WITH Caroline. We settled for 2nd without her. She also would have likely won the 100 Back later in the evening.
But you have to play the hand you're dealt. And Yorktown simply ran out of points in the second half of the meet. The Noblesville girls went 1-2-4 to outscore YHS 12-4 in the 500 Free and 1-2-3 in the 100 Back to outpoint the Lady Tigers 13-3. By then, the meet was effectively over for the girls.
The boys had an even rougher time with the deep and talented Millers. Yorktown managed only two wins on the night, both by sophomore Scott Heavilon. He took top honors in the 200 Free in 1:55.62, and later made it a double by whipping the field to win the 500 Free in 5:13.00.
The Tigers get a 20-day respite from competition over the upcoming Christmas break, but that only means that it's time for what I lovingly call Special High Intensity Training. "HIT" weeks are the most grueling conditioning period of the season for YHS swimmers. They'll need every ounce of love, support, sleep, food and fluids we can give them between now and the next time they race. For the record, that's on January 5th at New Castle.

HOMESTEAD INVITATIONAL--BEAVER REPEATS, GIRLS RELAYS STRONG
Senior Larah Beaver defended her title in the 100 Back, the Lady Tigers made a strong showing in the relays, and the boys managed two Top 10 relay efforts on Saturday at the Homestead Invitational.
This meet is among the toughest and most talent-laden competitions in Indiana each year, and the 2011 edition was no different. State cuts were being thrown down left and right, races were being decided by hundredths of a second, and the cream definitely rose to the top throughout the day.
Beaver shook off health problems this week to gut it out and repeat as the champion in the 100 Back. Homestead's outstanding senior Sarah Lohman actually led with 25 yards to go. But Beaver knows how to win, and she raced like the champion she is to win in the final ten yards in an IHSAA state cut time (58.12).
Beaver would also go on to finish 4th in the 100 Free (55.24).
The #19 Lady Tigers also made a statement in the relays. Caroline Grasso, Lauren Elston and Jessica Extine teamed with Beaver for an impressive 4th place finish in the 200 Free Relay. The girls put up a season-best 1:43.36 swimming over in Lane 1. Indiana Swimming's Tony Young probably called them "outside smoke" for their speed lying in the weeds.
The same four young ladies swam to 6th in the 200 Medley Relay (1:57.67) and 7th in the 400 Free Relay (3:51.49). YHS head coach Laura Slight will have a tough decision to make when sectional time rolls around--will she ask each of those four swimmers to give up one of their individual events to enter THREE strong relays? If not, which TWO relays will she stack to try to win?
The YHS girls also got a 9th place effort from the ailing Extine in the 50 Free (26.06), and a 10th place finish by Grasso in the 100 Back (1:03.14).
The Mighty Men of Yorktown had a tough day at the office as individuals. Scott Heavilon's 11th in the 200 Free (1:53.82) was as close as any Tiger got to the Top 10 on Saturday. But Heavilon teamed with Isiah Huisman, Thommy Brown and Luke Ledbetter for 9th in the 200 Free Relay (1:38.80). That would be the guys' best finish of the afternoon. The squad of Alex Nickoli, Brown, Ledbetter and Heavilon closed the meet with a 10th place swim in the 400 Free Relay (3:41.25).
The Tigers have a short respite from competition this week before closing the 2011 portion of the season on Friday. They host the powerful Noblesville Millers in a meet scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

This meet is among the toughest and most talent-laden competitions in Indiana each year, and the 2011 edition was no different. State cuts were being thrown down left and right, races were being decided by hundredths of a second, and the cream definitely rose to the top throughout the day.
Beaver shook off health problems this week to gut it out and repeat as the champion in the 100 Back. Homestead's outstanding senior Sarah Lohman actually led with 25 yards to go. But Beaver knows how to win, and she raced like the champion she is to win in the final ten yards in an IHSAA state cut time (58.12).
Beaver would also go on to finish 4th in the 100 Free (55.24).
The #19 Lady Tigers also made a statement in the relays. Caroline Grasso, Lauren Elston and Jessica Extine teamed with Beaver for an impressive 4th place finish in the 200 Free Relay. The girls put up a season-best 1:43.36 swimming over in Lane 1. Indiana Swimming's Tony Young probably called them "outside smoke" for their speed lying in the weeds.
The same four young ladies swam to 6th in the 200 Medley Relay (1:57.67) and 7th in the 400 Free Relay (3:51.49). YHS head coach Laura Slight will have a tough decision to make when sectional time rolls around--will she ask each of those four swimmers to give up one of their individual events to enter THREE strong relays? If not, which TWO relays will she stack to try to win?
The YHS girls also got a 9th place effort from the ailing Extine in the 50 Free (26.06), and a 10th place finish by Grasso in the 100 Back (1:03.14).
The Mighty Men of Yorktown had a tough day at the office as individuals. Scott Heavilon's 11th in the 200 Free (1:53.82) was as close as any Tiger got to the Top 10 on Saturday. But Heavilon teamed with Isiah Huisman, Thommy Brown and Luke Ledbetter for 9th in the 200 Free Relay (1:38.80). That would be the guys' best finish of the afternoon. The squad of Alex Nickoli, Brown, Ledbetter and Heavilon closed the meet with a 10th place swim in the 400 Free Relay (3:41.25).
The Tigers have a short respite from competition this week before closing the 2011 portion of the season on Friday. They host the powerful Noblesville Millers in a meet scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

GIRLS ROAR FOR FOUR, INDIANS SCALP BOYS
When you get on a roll, sometimes success seems automatic. And that's the zone the #19 Lady Tigers find themselves in right now. They roared from the start last night to demolish a badly outgunned Anderson Indians squad 142-36 in the girls half of a dual meet at the YHS pool. That's not a typo--the girls won by a whopping 106 points in running their current dual meet winning streak to four!
The boys meet was a different story. The Indians were the sectional runners-up last season, and they staked their claim to another shot at the title this year again last night. AHS has lots of top-end talent AND dual meet scoring depth, and they rode both, winning all but two events on their way to a 109-71 victory over the YHS guys.
Lots of Lady Tigers took home at least one blue ribbon Thursday night. Larah Beaver and Caroline Grasso grabbed four each; Jessica Extine and Lauren Elston picked up three each; Ashley Sexton and Katelyn Grasso were double winners; and Sam Mahon, Macey Taylor and Katie Keller also posted first place finishes.
The YHS boys had a lot tougher evening. Only two Tigers--diver Brandon Young and backstroker Isiah Huisman--won events for the green and white. Yorktown fought hard in every swim, but Anderson simply had too much firepower for the youthful Tigers. This is going to be a season where the Mighty Men of Yorktown take a LOT of lumps in dual meets, but it will ultimately lead to a better team--and program--in the future.
There is no rest for the weary Tigers. They head to Ft. Wayne tomorrow for the Homestead Invitational, a meet chock full of state ranked teams and national caliber swimmers. The level of competition will rival that of a mini-State Meet. Seats will be at a premium, so get there early and cheer your fannies off.

GIRLS EXTEND STREAK, BOYS LOSE IN ANOTHER MAALOX MOMENT
I'm fond of an old saying in sports--the only time the lead REALLY matters is at the finish. And the boys from Yorktown and Pendleton Heights reinforced it again last night.
The Arabian boys built an early lead, gave it back to Yorktown in the diving competition, and pulled even 83-83 heading into the final event of the night. But the PH guys dug deep and captured the winner-take-all 400 Free Relay and an exciting 93-87 victory in the Arabians' pool.
The Tigers had a pair of triple winners--sophomore Scott Heavilon grabbed individual blue ribbons in the 200 Free (1:56.58) and 500 Free (5:14.45); freshman Isiah Huisman continued his impressive start to the season, capturing the 50 Free (23.98) and the 100 Fly (1:00.99); Heavilon and Huisman teamed with junior Thommy Brown and freshman Luke Ledbetter for a 1st place finish in the 200 Free Relay (1:38.46). And freshman Brandon Young continued the youth movement, nailing down six points with a win in the diving well (145.00).
The #19 Lady Tigers held off their PH counterparts for a 101-84 victory, their third consecutive win over a Hoosier Heritage Conference rival. Senior Larah Beaver paced YHS with four blue ribbons; freshman phenom Lauren Elston took home three of her own; Caroline Grasso and Ashley Sexton joined Beaver and Elston on the winning 200 Medley Relay squad; it was freshman Katie Keller adding her effort to those of Grasso, Elston and Beaver to beat the field to the wall in the 400 Free Relay.
There is no rest for the weary (and in some cases, the ill)--the Tigers are right back in action Thursday night, when they host the Anderson Indians.

The Arabian boys built an early lead, gave it back to Yorktown in the diving competition, and pulled even 83-83 heading into the final event of the night. But the PH guys dug deep and captured the winner-take-all 400 Free Relay and an exciting 93-87 victory in the Arabians' pool.
The Tigers had a pair of triple winners--sophomore Scott Heavilon grabbed individual blue ribbons in the 200 Free (1:56.58) and 500 Free (5:14.45); freshman Isiah Huisman continued his impressive start to the season, capturing the 50 Free (23.98) and the 100 Fly (1:00.99); Heavilon and Huisman teamed with junior Thommy Brown and freshman Luke Ledbetter for a 1st place finish in the 200 Free Relay (1:38.46). And freshman Brandon Young continued the youth movement, nailing down six points with a win in the diving well (145.00).
The #19 Lady Tigers held off their PH counterparts for a 101-84 victory, their third consecutive win over a Hoosier Heritage Conference rival. Senior Larah Beaver paced YHS with four blue ribbons; freshman phenom Lauren Elston took home three of her own; Caroline Grasso and Ashley Sexton joined Beaver and Elston on the winning 200 Medley Relay squad; it was freshman Katie Keller adding her effort to those of Grasso, Elston and Beaver to beat the field to the wall in the 400 Free Relay.
There is no rest for the weary (and in some cases, the ill)--the Tigers are right back in action Thursday night, when they host the Anderson Indians.

GIRLS MOVE UP, READY FOR ARABIANS
Yorktown's girls have bumped up a notch in the weekly poll by the Indiana High School Swimming Coaches Association. The Lady Tigers carry the #19 ranking into tomorrow night's coed dual meet at Hoosier Heritage Conference rival Pendleton Heights.
The girls will be looking for their third-straight win after posting victories last week over fellow HHC foes Delta and New Palestine. The Tiger boys will be trying to bounce back after losing to the Dragons last Thursday night.
Tuesday night's meet is scheduled to begin at 5:15 in the Pendleton Heights High School pool.

KELSI HALL TEARS IT UP AT NATIONALS!
Former Yorktown swimmer Kelsi Hall is serving notice to the rest of the country--she'll be a force to be reckoned with at both the upcoming NCAA Championships and next summer's U.S. Olympic Trials.
The three-time Indiana high school state champion in the 50-yard freestyle raced to a lifetime best in the 50-METER version of the event Thursday in Atlanta. Hall's time of 25.69 was good enough for 4th place in the 'B' final and an overall 14th place finish at Nationals last night.
Her coach at the University of Miami, Christie Shefchunas, said, "I am so proud of Kelsi. Every time she swims the 50 long course, she gets faster and keeps moving up the rankings in the United States."
This year's Winter Nationals are being swum in long course meters instead of short course yards to give competitors a chance to post qualifying times for the Olympic Trials.
Kelsi had already punched her ticket to Omaha before last night's outstanding effort. But it makes her that much more formidable going into the Trials next June. And it no doubt makes her even MORE confident heading into the 2012 portion of her final college season at Miami.
Not bad for a girl from little old Yorktown, Indiana, eh?

TIGERS EARN SPLIT WITH DRAGONS
The annual Hoosier Heritage Conference meet is still six weeks away. But fans may have gotten a pretty good preview of how THIS season's HHC meet might play out last night in Yorktown-New Palestine meet in Hancock County.
The #20 Yorktown Tigers fought off a game challenge by the Dragons to win the girls side of the meet 103-83. Last night's performances (and those of the rest of the early season) have begun setting up what could be a terrific three-way battle for the HHC title between Yorktown, New Pal and Mt. Vernon. The YHS girls will have to be at their best in mid-January to defend last season's conference championship.
The Tiger boys swam as hard as they could, but dropped a 106-72 decision to the talented and deep New Pal squad. The Dragons should duke it out with Greenfield-Central for the HHC title next month, with Yorktown and Mt. Vernon capable of doing some damage as well.
But I digress. Here's more about how last night played out.
Coach Laura Slight's girls won nine out of twelve events to dominate the top of the standings, but New Pal kept it close with better scoring depth. Senior Larah Beaver, juniors Jessica Extine and Caroline Grasso, and freshman Lauren Elston teamed up to win a pair of relays. It was Grasso-Beaver-Elston-Extine topping the field in the 200 Medley Relay (1:56.87); the girls flip flopped to an order of Extine-Elston-Grasso-Beaver to cap off the night with a win in the 400 Free Relay (3:55.38).
In between, all four of those girls also captured individual events. Beaver took the 200 IM (2:17.70) and 100 Free (55.61); Grasso was 1st in the 200 Free (2:09.84); Elston led the field to the wall in the 100 Fly (1:03.41); Extine bested the competition in the 100 Breast (1:15.86). Senior diver Sam Mahon won another of her many career blue ribbons with a score of 180.20. And freshman Katie Keller picked up the first individual victory of her YHS career, outdistancing the field to capture gold in the 100 Back (1:10.50).
The Tiger boys could only muster three event wins last night. The quartet of Isiah Huisman, Scott Heavilon, Alex Nickoli and Luke Ledbetter opened the night with a victory in the 200 Medley Relay (1:55.55). With three freshmen and a sophomore in that group, the future is BRIGHT for the Tigers. Freshman Brandon Young topped the diving competition (143.05). And Heavilon posted a 1st place effort in the 500 Free (5:22.47).
The Tigers finish off the dual meet portion of their conference schedule next Tuesday, when they travel to Pendleton Heights to tangle with the Arabians.
