YORKTOWN SWIMMER HONORED

Yorktown junior Larah Beaver has been named the girl Athlete of the Week by the Muncie Star Press newspaper. The All-American backstroker is off to a fine start this season, and appears to be poised to make another strong run at the State Meet in February.

Congratulations, Larah.

YORKTOWN AT DELTA PREVIEW

It's time for the boys to make some noise as Yorktown kicks off the coed portion of its 2010-11 dual meet season tomorrow. That's when the gents join the girls for a Hoosier Heritage Conference showdown at Delta.

Head coach Matt Routh's guys begin their season as one of the state's elite teams. The Tigers are ranked #20 in the pre-season poll compiled by the Indiana High School Swimming Coaches Association. Yorktown senior Adam Voss leads the way, boasting the #4 ranking among the state's returning competitors in the 100-yard butterfly, along with the #7 ranking in the 200-yard freestyle.

YHS is far from being a one-man team, though. Senior Michael Heavilon, senior Anderson Highland transfer Hunter Hoffman, and freshman Scott Heavilon are also threats to score points across the full spectrum of strokes and distances. Look for all of them to earn their way into the IHSSCA rankings before the season is over. And senior Tyler Donges should be a consistent scorer all season long on the diving board.

Delta's boys have already gotten their feet wet this season. The Eagles are 1-0 after last week's 96.5-86.5 victory over New Castle. DHS got individual victories from sophomore Garland Ivy in the 50-yard freestyle (24.12) and senior Alex Zimmerman in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.42). The Eagles' 200-yard freestyle relay quartet of Ivy, sophomore Nathan Bolka, freshman Dylan Christman and sophomore Ben Fitzwater also brought home a blue ribbon, finishing in 1:44.01.

The Delta girls have started their season with a 1-1 dual meet record. The Eagles dropped their opener to Richmond 119-67, then bounced back last week for their first win, topping New Castle 100-86. Senior Emilee Kirby has won the 100-yard breaststroke in both meets for DHS (1:17.21 and 1:16.81, respectively); Kirby also brought home top honors against the Trojans in the 200-yard IM (2:25.42). Senior Katie Tomlin captured the 500-yard freestyle against Richmond (6:15.85), sophomore Maija Lewis bested the field against New Castle in the 50-yard freestyle (28.39), and senior Kaitlyn Kennedy took top honors in diving against New Castle with a score of 164.60.

Delta also won the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays in the New Castle meet. Tomlin, Kirby, Lewis and freshman Morgan Allen beat the field to the wall in the medley (2:10.44); the combo of Lewis, freshman Candace Torres, sophomore Victoria Brown and Kirby found victory with a time in the sprint free of 1:59.74.

The 22nd ranked Yorktown girls (0-1) will be looking for their first win of the season after dropping their opener to #19 Lawrence North 109-77. The YHS ladies had some good swims at the Westfield Invitational, and appear poised to even their record on Tuesday.

The meet is scheduled to begin at 5:15 p.m. at Delta High School.

WESTFIELD INVITATIONAL, TAKE TWO

Anyone who attended Saturday's Westfield Invitational got to see some fine early season swimming by some of Indiana's premier programs. Athletes are typically entering that "swimming tired" phase at this time of the
season--they aren't in sectional or State Meet form, so their best times are still well ahead of them.

What you see in November is an athlete's guts and determination--they RACE no matter what. So if what happened Saturday is any indication, the teams that compete with Fishers, Westfield, Brebeuf, Yorktown, Lafayette Jeff and Roncalli for sectional or conference championships will have their hands full in 2011.

Here are the complete results from the 2010 Westfield Invitational, courtesy of Shamrocks' head coach Kyle Messmore. Thanks, coach!

TIGERS FINISH 4TH AT WESTFIELD

The Yorktown Tigers failed to win an event Saturday as they finished 4th in the six-team Westfield Invitational.

Sectional rival Fishers captured the team championship, scoring 632 points to easily outdistance runner-up Westfield. The host Shamrocks tallied 515 points, with Brebeuf third at 383 and Yorktown right behind the Braves with 317. Lafayette Jeff finished the day 5th with 237 points, with Roncalli trailing the field with a final score of 180.

Head coach Matt Routh and assistant Frank Mattingly shook up the lineup at Westfield, re-arranging the order and composition on relays, and entering several Tigers in individual events they don't usually compete in. The results were mixed.

Junior Larah Beaver posted the meet's best finishes for Yorktown, taking runner-up honors in both the 200-yard IM (2:15.82) and the 100-yard freestyle (54.81). Beaver cut nearly four seconds off her previous lifetime best in the IM while competing in the 'B' heat--it might have been an even more interesting day if she had gone
head-to-head with Brebeuf junior standout Hope Hourigan, who swam in the 'A' heat and won the blue ribbon in 2:13.31.

Sophomore Jessica Extine also made a strong individual showing, placing 3rd in the 100-yard butterfly (swimming in the 'B' heat) and 5th in the 50-yard freestyle (again from the 'B' heat). Jess also threw down an impressive 24.96 anchor split for the medley relay squad. Nice job, Jess!

The Tigers 200-yard medley relay team of Caroline Grasso, Kersea Gable, Beaver and Extine swam to a third place finish in 1:56.72; the 400-yard freestyle relay combo of Beaver, Gable, Extine and senior Gabby LaVoie brought home a 4th place finish with a time of 4:03.01. The medley result was about a half-second faster than Thursday night's time; the 400 time was slightly slower than two days ago against Lawrence North.

Several other Yorktown swimmers had nice showings--sophomore Caroline Grasso made a statement about her sprinting ability; her 26.23 anchor split in the 200-yard freestyle relay was the best of the eight Tigers to compete in that event today. Grasso also bested her seed time in the 100-yard backstroke by almost four seconds, finishing in 1:05.65. Keep up the good work, Caroline!

Anderson Highland junior transfer Brooke Sigler had a nice 2:14.46 in the 200-yard freestyle. That's the best time any Tiger has swum so far this young season by five-and-a-half seconds. Way to go, Brooke!

The Tigers have a ten-day break from competition now before they hit the water again (with the boys for the first time this season) for a Hoosier Heritage Conference meet at Delta on November 30th.

#18 LAWRENCE NORTH 109, #22 YORKTOWN 77

All-American Julie Ogden picked up four blue ribbons last night, leading 18th ranked Lawrence North to a season-opening 109-77 victory over 22nd ranked Yorktown.

Ogden won both the 200-yard IM and 100-yard freestyle, the latter in thrilling fashion. The Wildcat senior and Yorktown junior All-American Larah Beaver duked it out in a heavyweight fight, going stroke-for-stroke across all four lengths of the pool before Ogden edged Beaver by .11. It was the closest and most thrilling race of the meet, and likely a hint of things to come for both young ladies when the IHSAA tournament begins in February.

Ogden also helped guide two LN relays to victory. The squad of Ogden, Taryn Anderson, Laura Weiss and Laura Apple opened the meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay. Meghan Anderson and Peyton Cunningham joined Ogden and Apple later in the night to nail down first in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The Tigers fell behind by 20 points after the first four events, but surged in the middle of the meet to put a scare into LN. Divers Sam Mahon, Ellie Smith and Alexa Voss went 1-3-4 to to bring Yorktown within 14 at 46-32, and sophomore Jessica Extine's victory in the 100-yard butterfly (coupled with sophomore Caroline Grasso's 3rd) cut the LN lead to 12 points after six events.

The Tigers seemed to run out of gas in the second half of the meet, though. Beaver swam to victory in the
100-yard backstroke, and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Beaver, Extine, Brooke Sigler and and Ashley Sexton easily won the final event of the meet. But all too often, the Tigers lack of scoring depth hurt them badly.

LN swept the top three spots in both the IM and breaststroke. That's a huge 26-6 advantage in just those two events. If the Tigers had managed to score more competitively in those swims, Yorktown would have been in position to possibly change the outcome. That gives Yorktown plenty to work on as they prepare for tomorrow's tough field at the Westfield Invitational.

IT'S OPENING DAY!

There's something very special about what athletes call "Opening Day." Whether it's a football player FINALLY getting to hit someone in a different colored jersey, a baseball player ripping an April gapper, or a swimmer answering the whistle to take the blocks for the first time, the competitive juices really get flowing in the season's first contest.

The girls from Lawrence North and Yorktown get to renew that feeling in just a few short hours. Dozens of athletes who have spent hundreds of hours preparing their muscles and minds for this day will put it all on the line in the YHS pool. A couple of hours later, some will leave happy in victory, others will leave disappointed in loss; virtually ALL of them will leave exhausted. But they'll all be a step closer to their individual and team goals, and that's a good thing in this day and age.

So if you don't have any plans for this evening, come on out to the Yorktown pool, spend a few bucks on a ticket and concessions, and enjoy watching some of the hardest working kids in this area strut their stuff. You'll be glad you did.

After all, it's Opening Day.

EARLY SEASON FAST TIMES, TAKE TWO

Another team has come out of the gates quickly, again from the far northern part of the state. #19 Concord's 200-yard medley relay team of Mia Leas, Kylie Little, Abby Linn and Audra Burtch smoked the water in 1:49.11 in Tuesday's 108-77 win over Bremen.

Future Yorktown opponent Noblesville lost a season-opening barn burner to Zionsville Tuesday night. The 8th ranked Eagles survived a 1-2 medley relay finish by Noblesville and edged the 7th ranked Millers 94-92. Zionsville's Zoe Mattingly went 57.30 to win the 100-yard butterfly. Millers diver Katie Bittner, a former IHSAA state champion, captured the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 260.50.

Yorktown travels to Noblesville for their annual dual meet on December 16th.

EARLY SEASON FAST TIMES ACROSS STATE

Carmel is the #1 team in the girls pre-season poll, and rightfully so after 24-straight state championships. The Greyhounds are probably a lock (Locke?) to make it 25 in February. But several other teams are making strong statements in the water in the first two weeks of the season.

#31 Penn's 200-yard medley relay team of Bethany Galat, Anne Spalding, Kimberly Hochstedler and Sarah Coyne threw down a 1:51.26 in their meet with #3 Munster--which was no slouch either, posting a 1:51.70 on opening night. Penn beat Munster that night, 105-81.

Powerful #4 Chesterton's medley relay is right on Penn's heels. The Trojan quartet of Maddie Miller, Olivia Kabacinski, Meaghan McLaughlin and Lauren Foor touched in 1:51.38 in their victory over Highland.

Two of Indiana's top programs tangle Thursday when Yorktown hosts Lawrence North in the 2010-11 season opener for both girls swimming and diving teams.

The Wildcats are ranked 18th in the state in the pre-season poll compiled by the Indiana High School Swim Coaches Association (IHSSCA). LN put on an impressive show in last February's State Meet, scoring 52 points to finish 13th. The Wildcats got their 200-yard medley relay team into the 'A' final (they got disqualified), the LN girls captured 8th place in the 200-yard freestyle relay, and their 400-yard freestyle relay team finished 11th. LN senior Julie Ogden was 2010 state runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly, and she's ranked #1 in that event among returnees for 2011.

LN is far from being a one-woman team this season, though. Sophomores Laura Weiss and Taryn Anderson joined Ogden on last season's sectional champion medley relay team. Junior Peyton Cunningham was sectional champion in the 50-yard freestyle and runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle; Weiss was sectional runner-up in the 200-yard IM; Anderson finished 3rd in the 100-yard freestyle at the sectional; sophomore Morgan Matsuoka finished 2nd in the 500-yard freestyle; senior Allison Crone joined Ogden and Cunningham on a 1st place
200-yard freestyle relay team; Anderson put up a runner-up finish in the 100-yard backstroke; Weiss was a sectional runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke; and the Wildcats return half of their sectional champion
400-yard freestyle relay squad in Ogden and Cunningham.

The cupboard is far from bare at Yorktown this year, too. The Tiger girls start 2010-11 as the 22nd ranked team in the IHSSCA poll.

Junior All-American Larah Beaver finished 11th in the 100-yard backstroke at last season's State Meet following her sectional-record championship performance the week before. Beaver won the long course meters state championship in her signature event over the summer, and starts this season holding the #7 ranking in that event, along with the #12 ranking in the pre-season 100-yard freestyle.

Sophomores Caroline Grasso, Jessica Extine and Kersea Gable are also capable of top-level performances. That trio teamed with Beaver to compete in the 200-yard medley relay at the State Meet last year, and if they can stay healthy this season, those four Tigers will make a serious run at the YHS record of 1:49.91 set back in 2006. Only ten teams broke the 1:50 barrier at the 2010 State Meet, so such a time could also put the Tigers in position for a Top 10 finish at this seasons' big dance.

Extine has the talent to make a deep run in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly this year; Grasso's abilities make her a threat in both the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke; Gable is the program's best breaststroker. Senior Gabby LaVoie and juniors Sam Mahon, Kirsten Nickoli, Chappell Railey and Chelsea Watters scored points in the 2010 sectional, and they'll need to continue making solid contributions for Yorktown to succeed in dual meets.

Thursday's meet begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Yorktown High School pool. Come early, be loud and be proud.

A DAY FOR REFLECTION

I would be remiss if I didn't take some time on this Veterans Day 2010 to mention my personal gratitude to all of our men and women in uniform. They are the modern warriors who keep us all free to pursue swimming, or journalism, or any other passion we choose.

Many of today's soldiers, sailors and fliers are the sons and daughters of those who served our country during their younger years. The luckiest of today's military servants got to meet their descendants; some of the less fortunate had to settle for other people's recollections of their fathers, mothers, uncles and aunts. THEY made the ultimate sacrifice by dying in service to the United States.

On this day, let us all take just a moment to think about how lucky we are, how indebted we are, and how much we all stand to lose if this great nation ever loses its most precious possession--our FREEDOM.

And thank a veteran today for his or her role in guaranteeing our freedoms.

Long live the USA!

PARENTS MEETING TONIGHT, MEET CANCELLED

A couple of miscellaneous tidbits here nine days before the first meet of the season: The YHS Swim Booster Club will host a parents meeting tonight at 7:00 in the YHS library.

We've also had a schedule change before the season is even underway. The Westfield dual meet that had been scheduled on Nov. 27 (two days after Thanksgiving) at Yorktown has been cancelled. So cross that one off your list.

On the flipside, the girls will be testing their mettle early this season against some of the state's top competition. The Lady Tigers open 2010-11 against the 18th ranked Lawrence North Wildcats and top flyer Julie Ogden on Nov. 18th. That meet is at home.

Two days later, the girls travel to Westfield for the Shamrocks' annual Invitational. The field includes
#6 Fishers, #22 Yorktown, #25 Brebeuf, #31 Westfield, Lafayette Jeff and Roncalli. Expect some fast early season times as a few of the top-ranked individuals and relay teams in Indiana push each other.

FORMER TIGERS OFF TO STRONG STARTS

Two former Yorktown High School swimmers are off to fast starts to the 2010-11 NCAA season.

Miami Hurricanes junior Kelsi Hall (formerly of Kentucky) is ranked 20th in the country in the 50-yard freestyle among all Division 1 women. Hall has a season best time of :23.31, and she owns the top four times in that event so far this season for the 'Canes. It appears Kelsi's change of scenery has done her a lot of good--watch out for her at the Atlantic Coast Conference meet later this season.

Eastern Michigan senior Sarah Kowalski (can she already be a senior?) has also gotten off to a quick start to her final collegiate season. Sarah's early season best time of :23.56 in the 50-yard freestyle ranks her 2nd in the Mid-American Conference and 54th in the country in that event. She has also gone :52.27 in the 100-yard freestyle, the 4th fastest time in the MAC during the 2010-11 campaign. Sarah will also be making some big waves at the MAC champhionships in a few months.

These two ladies excel in their sport with grace and class, just what you'd expect from them. Nice job, girls. Keep up the good work and make Yorktown proud!
