#18 LAWRENCE NORTH 109, #22 YORKTOWN 77

All-American Julie Ogden picked up four blue ribbons last night, leading 18th ranked Lawrence North to a season-opening 109-77 victory over 22nd ranked Yorktown.

Ogden won both the 200-yard IM and 100-yard freestyle, the latter in thrilling fashion. The Wildcat senior and Yorktown junior All-American Larah Beaver duked it out in a heavyweight fight, going stroke-for-stroke across all four lengths of the pool before Ogden edged Beaver by .11. It was the closest and most thrilling race of the meet, and likely a hint of things to come for both young ladies when the IHSAA tournament begins in February.

Ogden also helped guide two LN relays to victory. The squad of Ogden, Taryn Anderson, Laura Weiss and Laura Apple opened the meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay. Meghan Anderson and Peyton Cunningham joined Ogden and Apple later in the night to nail down first in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The Tigers fell behind by 20 points after the first four events, but surged in the middle of the meet to put a scare into LN. Divers Sam Mahon, Ellie Smith and Alexa Voss went 1-3-4 to to bring Yorktown within 14 at 46-32, and sophomore Jessica Extine's victory in the 100-yard butterfly (coupled with sophomore Caroline Grasso's 3rd) cut the LN lead to 12 points after six events.

The Tigers seemed to run out of gas in the second half of the meet, though. Beaver swam to victory in the
100-yard backstroke, and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Beaver, Extine, Brooke Sigler and and Ashley Sexton easily won the final event of the meet. But all too often, the Tigers lack of scoring depth hurt them badly.

LN swept the top three spots in both the IM and breaststroke. That's a huge 26-6 advantage in just those two events. If the Tigers had managed to score more competitively in those swims, Yorktown would have been in position to possibly change the outcome. That gives Yorktown plenty to work on as they prepare for tomorrow's tough field at the Westfield Invitational.
