UNDEFEATED BEARCATS, UNDENIABLE TIGERS

Every sports team I've ever been associated with as a player or coach has a few special games circled on its schedule--the contests that define a season, and sometimes an entire program. Winning those competitions brings on a sense of euphoria that is tough to match; losing one can crush your spirit.

TONIGHT is one of those contests.

The Muncie Central Bearcats and the Yorktown Tigers renew their long, spirited, and sometimes not-so-friendly rivalry, this time with a twist--the meet will be held at Muncie Southside because of a water line break at Central.

The Bearcats are having a monster season. Both the MC boys and girls are undefeated, and the Lady Bearcats just won the first North Central Conference championship on their side of the program's history. The girls in purple and white are loaded with young talent, headlined by freshman Emmy Rawson. She's the real deal, and probably headed to the State Meet (and perhaps scoring in it) next month.

The Bearcat men are just as good, with a blend of talented youngsters and a seasoned group of accomplished upperclassmen led by multi-event stud Dan Proctor.

The Tigers are no slouches, either. The girls are coming on strong after a fantastic performance ten days ago at New Palestine, where they reclaimed the Hoosier Heritage Conference championship for the first time since 2008. The YHS boys are still ranked among Indiana's Top 20 teams in the latest coach's poll, and have some of the best talent anywhere in this part of the state.

These schools match up extremely well in 2011--they're VERY even going into this final dual meet of the regular season for the YHS girls.

Two years ago, these teams went toe-to-toe for 15 rounds in front of a packed house before the meet was decided in the final event. If Central and Yorktown swim up to their abilities tonight, look for the same thing to happen again this evening.

GO TIGERS!
