TIGERS SWEEP EAGLES

Yorktown's boys won every event, and the girls won all but two Tuesday night, as the Tigers roared past the Delta Eagles in a coed Hoosier Heritage Conference meet in Royerton. The boys prevailed 113-67, while the ladies breezed to an even bigger 126-60 victory.

Head coach Matt Routh's boys opened their 2010-11 season in style, displaying power and depth from top to bottom. Seniors Adam Voss, Michael Heavilon and Hunter Hoffman were each double individual winners--Voss took top honors in the 100-yard fly (53.40) and 100-yard back (58.25); Heavilon nailed down the blue ribbons in the 200-yard IM (2:09.56) and 500-yard free (5:18.83); and Hoffman sizzled the water in his first meet as a Tiger, beating the field to the wall in the 50-yard free (21.78) and 100-yard breast (1:03.12).

The YHS "Old Men" weren't the only impressive athletes on Tuesday night. Freshman Scott Heavilon also served notice that he'll be a force to be reckoned with this season, winning the first varsity race of his high school career in the 200-yard free (2:01.74).

The YHS boys also got individual wins from seniors Wes Gustin in the 100-yard free (54.67) and Tyler Donges in 1 meter diving (182.75).

The Yorktown girls also had a good night against the Eagles. Junior Larah Beaver broke the Delta pool record on her way to victory in the 100-yard back. Beaver's 1:00.08 smashed former Eagle Jillian Smith's old record of 1:02.24 in 2004. Beaver also topped the field in the 200-yard free (2:00.55). Sophomore Jessica Extine matched Beaver's double-blue individual night, going gold in the 50-yard free (25.83) and the 100-yard fly (1:05.55). Beaver and Extine were also members of two winning relay squads. Senior Gabby LaVoie and sophomore Kersea Gable also took part in two relay victories.

The Lady Tigers also received first place performances from sophomore Caroline Grasso in the 100-yard free (59.01), junior Brooke Sigler in the 500-yard free--from lane 6, no less (6:00.42), and sophomore Sam Mahon in 1 meter diving (196.45).

The Tigers are back in action tomorrow night, hosting HHC rival New Palestine at 5:15 in the YHS pool.

GO TIGERS!
