NEW PALESTINE-YORKTOWN PREVIEW, TIGERS RANKED

The Yorktown Tigers are ready to race again tonight, hosting the New Palestine Dragons in a Hoosier Heritage Conference coed meet at YHS.

This should be a very interesting evening, especially on the boys side of the meet. Yorktown had won eight consecutive HHC titles until New Pal snapped the streak a year ago. I don't believe for one minute that the Tigers who were part of that team have forgotten how it felt to watch someone else hoist the trophy, or toss their coach into the pool. Look for Yorktown to come out snarling in this one.

The Lady Tigers are also in a position to make a statement about the resurgence of the YHS program. They whipped HHC rival Delta two nights ago, and they have a chance to assert their dominance over another quality opponent tonight. With arch rival Pendleton Heights looming next week, making it two-straight in the HHC tonight (and hopefully three in-a-row next week) would give the girls a lot of confidence when they go for the conference title next month.

Tonight's meet begins at 5:15 in the YHS pool.

GO TIGERS!

There are two rating systems in place for high school swimming in Indiana this season--the traditional poll compiled each week by the Indiana High School Swimming Coaches Association (based on career-best times regardless of year), and a new one published by varvee.com, the website used by the IHSAA to compile statistics. The varvee rankings differ from the IHSSCA poll--varvee lists athletes based on their best times from the current season.

Yorktown's strong start to 2010-11 has put several Tiger boys and girls on both lists. The boys are now #19 in the IHSSCA rankings (one spot higher than the pre-season poll), with the girls also up one spot to #21 this week. Adam Voss is the lone Tiger ranked by the IHSSCA in an individual event (actually two), but that points out the weakness in the IHSSCA rankings. They're based only on reported times; Hunter Hoffman, Michael Heavilon and the relays would also be in the IHSSCA ratings this week if they were
all-inclusive.

On the girls side, Larah Beaver is ranked in three individual events, with Jessica Extine and Caroline Grasso joining her with one individual ranking each. It's the first time Grasso has moved into the IHSSCA poll in the backstroke--way to go, Caroline!

The YHS girls also show up in two of the three ISSCA relay rankings this week.

Yorktown is also well represented on the varvee leaderboards. Hoffman has the third fastest 50 free time reported in Indiana so far this season. Voss has the third fastest time in the 100 fly. Beaver has the fourth fastest time in the 100 back, and the fifth fastest time in the 100 free. And the girls medley relay team finds itself the 12th fastest in the state among the times reported to varvee.

With the way these kids and their teammates are working in the practice pool and weight room every day, just sit back and enjoy watching the Tigers continue to climb higher between now and February.

GO TIGERS!
